3.0 out of 5 stars not bad...but not brilliant 6 July 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I quite enjoyed this book and I would say it is worth reading if you want a light novel for some holiday reading or such. Abit shallow at times, but Ivy is a likeable character. Give it a go....

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartful and humourous! 4 Jan 2006
By Lucy Reynolds VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Ivy is a high-powered “suit” living the kind of life that most people can only dream about. She has a successful husband and two children, an apartment in a desired area, and is part of an elite social circle.
However, in a very short time her life is turned upside down as she loses her job, discovers her husband is having an affair, and as a result of leaving him and moving into a less desired area, she is rejected by the social elite.
She starts life over again as a kindergarten admissions advisor, dealing with the little “darlings” of those very people that have rejected her.

The novel is one of the funniest romantic comedies that I have ever come across, and is a wonderful read. It’s an uplifting story with a poignant message about how wealth is not the answer to a happy life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible 13 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
It's interesting to see the very divided reviews there are for this book - it's obviously a case of love-it or hate-it.

I must say that I fall into the hate-it camp. This book contains some really horrible charaters and the narrator is one of them. The story itself is full of far fetched episodes (Best friend marries billionaire, hostage siege, eaten by crocodiles? Really?) and grotesque caricatures of shallow, poisonous upper middle class New York folk. Think Sex and the City without any warmth, humour or wit and add pre school kids. I found the central character Ivy very hard to like or sympathise with as she seemed like a bit of a bitch. The only mildly interesting thing was the descriptions of the machinations of the school selection process in New York although I don't really know how realistic this is, given that the author was trying so hard to be sassy and outrageous. The book seems to vacilate between wild fantasy and gritty reality so it inhabits a queasy middleground where you just can't believe any of it. Is it meant to be some sort of expose?

I also felt that the cute 'Lulu Guinness-esque' cover (of this edition anyway) didn't tally with the sleazy content so don't be fooled.

The whole thing made me feel a bit grubby to be honest, but I was stragely compelled to stick with it until half way through but couldn't stand it anymore and ditched it. If you like Kathy Lethe's 'offerings' (and I do not) you will probaby like this. Luckily someone gave me this so don't waste your money. Ugh! Grim.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull, disappointing and amateurish 20 Nov 2008
By Tulip
Format:Paperback
I don't like this book at all. I haven't even finished reading it, I'm over half way through it but I don't think I can persevere to the end. My first issue with it is that it is incredibly boring, it sounds good on the cover but the writer goes in to so much detail about every single parent and child Ivy meets in her new job as kindergarten admissions advisor that its just DULL. So much of the story is devoted to this that it becomes monotonous. Also, I think the book is badly written, it's very amateurish and the humour is seriously lacking. The writer makes a few attempts at jokes but they are really cringe worthy; not witty or clever at all. It comes across as very unnatural, like she's trying too hard to be funny. All in all, a very poor read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable light read for a cold afternoon. 23 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback
When I picked this book I expected a dose of quite light chic lit and this is exactly what I got. I did enjoy this book as light relief, it was witty and many of the characters, though larger than life, were very funny.
I struggled with the idea of the main character being down on her luck as part of the plot involved her best friend being married to a multi millionaire. Few broke single mums are provided with regular makeovers or are bought a date with George Clooney. Also her change of heart and change of attitude (at the heart of most good pieces of chic lit) was a little half hearted.
The romance part of the story was also slightly weak with the heroine unable to make up her mind between two likely suitors (unlikely if really head over heals in love) but despite a few flaws it was an enjoyable read with plenty going on. I would recommend it to anyone merely for the manner in which her back stabbing work mate gets his just desserts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull 21 July 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I didn't enjoy this book at all. I did not like the central character, who was not a very nice woman. I found it impossible to empathise with her and found her very shallow.
Much of the plot was riduculous, and rather offensive.
The romance element was predictable, although I did not find it remotely believable. I read it because it was one of Richard and Judy's summer reads, but I won't bother in future if this is the standard of their choices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book !! 28 July 2005
Format:Paperback
I absolutely loved this book !! Ivy Ames the lead character lives the life of the high powered New York businesswoman earning a 7 figure salary. Until she is sacked, then the fun begins. Out goes the life coach, Park Avenue apartment, $1000 haircuts and husband ! With no job Ivy sets up a business guiding parents through New York's tough private school admission process where she encounters psychotic parents and demonic children ! The results lead Ivy on a morality journey where she is torn between wanting her old life back or accepting who she is becoming. This book is a perfect beach read, easy to get into and well written, all in all a fantastic debut. Those who enjoy the likes of Jane Green, Louise Bagshawe and Marian Keyes will love this book.
