Book Description

Two feuding families, two love stories - and a lot of delicious Italian food.

Product Description

Pieta Martinelli's sister is getting married. Since she is a bridal designer it falls to her to make the wedding gown. But Pieta is distracted by a series of unanswered questions. Why is her father feuding with another Italian in the neighbourhood? Why is her mother so faded and sad? And could the man she's always held a torch for really be getting married to someone else?

As Pieta stitches and beads her sister's wedding gown she uncovers the secrets that have made her family what it is and that stand between her and happiness.

THE ITALIAN WEDDING is a feast of food and love. It's about discovering who your parents really are. And who you really want to be.

3.0 out of 5 stars It charmed me 15 April 2009
By Julia Flyte TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Pieta and her sister Addolorata have grown up in London, daughters to an English mother and an Italian father. For their entire life, they have been forbidden to associate with the DeMatteo family without knowing why. Pieta is a bridal designer and as they work together on her sister's wedding dress, her mother finally tells her the story of her family, a story that travels from a remote Italian village to Rome and then to London. Armed with this knowledge, Pieta will bring about some dramatic changes in all of their lives.

There are so many problems with this book that I hardly know where to begin, but what I must stress is that despite all of these problems it is still immensely charming and likeable. I relished the way it transported me to Italy and the way that food is discussed so often and so lovingly. Pieta's father Beppi is a chef and the book is punctuated with his recipes for various Italian dishes. Normally I would say that the literary world has done recipes in novels to death, but here it does feel appropriate and it was also endearing to read in the acknowledgements at the book's end that large parts of the story were based on Nicky's own parents and that the recipes do indeed come from her father. They look genuinely delicious and I intend to give some of them a try.

So what doesn't work? For starters, it's incredibly predictable. You can tell from a long way off how it's going to come together and it doesn't offer any twists or surprises to sustain interest. None of the characters feel like real, fleshed out people. The most interesting and developed are Pieta's parents, but the other characters are just one-dimensional walk-ons (particularly Pieta's love interest).

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance in Rome, Food and Weddings 10 Dec 2009
By Jo D'Arcy TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
Pieta is a wedding dress designer who although works for someone else has her own ideas and when she has a forces 2 week holiday she finishers her sister's wedding gown with the help of her mother, Catherine or Caterina as she is known to her husband, Pieta's father.

Pieta gets the chance to ask her mother why a family feud continues and for what reason. Her mother dealing with another issue closer to home- her husband's sudden illness. Uses the time helping Pieta with the delicate beading on her youngest daughters wedding gown, to reveal the story of the past and how it has affected the present and even the future. Nicky Pellegrino takes the reader back to Pieta's mother's experiences of Rome and we discover how Catherine falls in love with the place and a man who eventually becomes her husband.

For me the book flows neatly between the past and the present. The only thing that `jarred' it for me was the insertion of recipes. Rather random in my opinion and something which I chose to ignore as the story was rich enough with culinary asides without this insertion.

This book absorbs everything Italian, it has a real presence and you are taken from the tourist to the local when Pellegrino describes the area, the people, the family loyalties, the religion and the food. Romance is the key to this book, it shows it in many different forms and variations. Romance of love, food, parents and children, sisters, work colleagues, forgotten loves to name a few.

A great book which takes you away from yourself to experience something else - all warm and fluffy but captivating nonetheless.

A lovely easy read that made me nostalgic for a carefree youth. I just wish I knew what the occasional Italian words meant. They didn't spoil anything, just me being curious.

This is a good accompaniment to the daily commute, helping to transport you from the heat and crush of strangers to the preferable warmth of Italy. I liked the characters and the plot unfolded at a pleasant pace.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Italian Wedding 10 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I loved the dynamics of this whole family saga and also Nicky's ideas about learning of the journey of our parents. It certainly made me think and ask mine about their earlier years!

I love the balance Nicky achieves between Italy, food and the colours of people's lives. Her books are the perfect easy read when an escape from the day to day is needed!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nicky Pellegrino The Italian Wedding-
Really couldnt get into this one and abandoned after first chapter - although may come back to it if desperate. Just too light weight for me and not written in the style I prefer.
