Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A band that had a large cult following before they made it big with the album 'Vienna'. This is worlds apart from 'Vienna' - no Midge Ure, but the genius of John Fox instead.
The songs are somewhere between electronic music, 70's experimentation and punk. They range from the rocking 'Young Savage' through the weird 'I want to be a machine' to the chilled out 'Hiroshima mon amour'. Eclectic is an over-used word, and usually means that music has worldwide influences, but this is european eclecticism at its best.
Some of these songs hook you instantly, some make you want to listen to them again to take in what you missed the first time, and others take a few listens to get your bearings; all of them are good, original listening though, and make you want to listen again and again.

Nice to have all the good Island Records/John Foxx era material on one CD, along with a couple of rare b-sides. Oh for the "Live at the Retro" EP on CD release now also!
The early material showed signs of punk, mixed with electro and tinged with influences like Roxy Music (check out RockWrok). This material was streets ahead of anything they did afterwards, with maybe only Lament coming close.

Before this album, Ultravox represented elegance, mannequin-like porcelain beauty and stylistic art based productions to me. On hearing there 'Ultravox!' days, under the heavy influence of John Foxx (who's solo music is the epitome of neo-romance), Ultravox suddenly appeared heavy and feedback-drenched. A total opposite sound to what I had become accustomed to, or fundamentally liked! However, this album, a combination of 3 early Ultravox! albums is sensational. Its rough, in your face, totally disorganised and fantastic for it. A complete reversal of the sounds of 'Rage in Eden' or 'Lament'. Ultravox now seem more complete in my eyes, after hearing their early stuff. Buy it if you haven't heard this sound yet, or buy it still if you need a 3 in 1 album of Ultravox's! pre-Vienna works etc.
