7 of 7 people found the following review helpful By Naomi B on 7 Mar. 2007
Format: Paperback
This book is about the island of Skokholm and the wonderful wildlife, especcialy birds, that live of the this remote island off the coast of Pembrokeshire.
Ronald Lockley clearly has a passion for wildlife, and you can learn a lot about the intimate habits of the Birds such as Manx Shearwaters and Storm Petrels, as well as Puffins and common birds such as Gulls by reading this book.
He also writes about the Rabbits on the island, and about their relationship with the birds, they dig holes and the birds nest in them in the summer. It also explains how they got to the island, by Norman visitors and their unique genetic make-up.
This amazing island is crammed with some remarkable creatures and this book is well worth a read, if you like Birdwatching or just Animals.
Ronald Lockley explains how he aquired this remarkable island, and how he came to live there for a few years, and had a family, while he monitered the wildlife and found out some fascinating things about the birds.

A lay ornithologist 27 Aug. 2011
By nature lover - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
"The Island" gives a good insight how different views about nature conservation were some 50 years ago. It shows how the author was at that time a "voice in the wilderness" as nobody then thought that a marvellous island like the one he buys and inhabits was worthy of conservation - which it is nowadays. Author must have been one of the first lay ornithologists to study behaviour of seabirds and thus lay a good foundation for today's scientists.
