."..Dart-Thornton has crafted an impressive start to an epic journey down the corridors of myth and legend....This isn't a fairy tale wrapped up with a happily-ever-after, but readers looking for an intense and old-fashioned magical world will eagerly anticipate the next step in the journey."--"Romantic Times BookClub Magazine" on "The Iron Tree"
"Endowing her characters with courtly yet bucolic diction, almost Elizabethan, and casting her narrative in clean yet poetic prose, Dart-Thornton conjures up her world of Tir and its rituals and beliefs in the luminous yet hard-edged manner of Jack Vance or Mary Gentle."--"The ""Washington"" Post" on "The Iron Tree"
"The first "Crowthistle" volume is a leisurely paced romance of extraordinary events. One can almost hear Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov or Erich Wolfgang Korngold's music in the background as Jarred tries to free himself from the clinging skeleton or takes the lovely Lilith in his arms. With scenes as vivid as any Technicolor extravaganza, "The Iron Tree "will capture readers' imaginations."--"Starlog "on" The Iron Tree"

After reading the Bitterbynde trilogy in my teens, I was very excited to hear about her new trilogy coming out. When I picked this book up, I was half wishing for it to mention the awkward ending of the last series...but it does not. Although it is set in the same world, it is a completely new batch of characters...The pace I find is much slower, and it did not captivate me like the first series. I used to love her poetic descriptions and the way she entwined folklore in her fiction. There does not seem to be as much of that here. This book could have been finished in 300 pages, not many events take place, and it is very mills and booms..the only reason why I rushed out to get the second installment is because of the tragic and unpredicted ending..hopfully the next one will be better?

A work in progress 15 Mar 2006

I am a fan of the Bitterbynde Trilogy, so when I saw that Cecilia Dart-Thornton had a new book out I quickly jumped on the band-wagon. Unfortunately, I found the book a bit dull in comparison to her previous series. There was very little action until the very end, so it seems that, or I hope that, the author was merely laying the groundwork for the next title in the series. I found that I did not connect with these characters, unlike the first series, and I hope that Jewel's character will develop into a more likeable person as she is exposed to life outside the sheltering arms of her parents. I will keep my figures crossed.

A (female) friend of mine recommended this book to me years ago and it has been collecting dust since I ordered it from Amazon back in 2007. Cleaning out my closet, I discovered it and decided to give it a go and ... oh dear. This is not a good book at all for so many reasons.

For starters, Cecilia makes the crucial mistake of idealising her "male hero" Jarred far too much. Flawless characters are flat, dull, uninteresting and simply don't allow much room for development and to do this to the main character is a grave sin.

The book also reeks of pretentiousness - especially the dialogue. Using exaggerated posh language like "I'faith, you are too kind - but pray, do not trouble yourself" or "As a man of honour I could not call you thus". Despite all the fancy words (which surely exist to make the story feel more romantic than it is) she should have focussed on her basic grammar mistakes instead!

The third big problem, is the romantic bits. She attempts to keep the readers in suspense while dipping them into nauseating amounts of sugary romantic nonsense. Entire pages will be about how a single brush from Lilith sends Jarred reeling (more likely, it makes him pitch a tent but hey, let's pretend he's a perfect prince and has perfect control over the down-stairs department, eh? Unlike every other guy in existence). But while I appreciate well-written romance in a story, it's just not done well here. With the main character being so flawless, it feels, again, like a girl's wet dream and just has no link to reality. The few attempts to add some tension to the romantic bits, are merely there to make Jarred look even more flawless.

Besides these three big mistakes, there's more smaller ones as well: the story is riddled with elements that don't make that much sense, some parts are screaming for more detail are left without while other parts are flooded with detail where there should be far less. The entire flow of the story is wrong as well - the pace goes from very very slow to suddenly very fast and the author often picks the wrong moments to go fast or slow it seems.

In general, I wanted to give the book a chance (for the sake of my friend, mostly) but it's just a big disaster. There's nothing original here, nothing inspiring, it's filled with dreadful mistakes and while it may appeal to girls who are dipping their toes into fantasy and love a good cheap romantic novel, it's certainly NOT for any regular fan of fantasy series.
