A vivid account of Bobby Windsor's life as a rugby player in the pre-commercial era of rugby union

Product Description

Lions legend Bobby Windsor has enjoyed triumphs beyond the dreams of most international players but has also suffered personal tragedy. His rugby career as the best hooker in the British Isles during the second golden era of Welsh rugby in the 1970s is a turbulent tale of blood and thunder on the pitch. There are riotous incidents off the pitch, including unscheduled fights with professional boxers, revelations about illegal payments during the so-called amateur era and what Windsor did to upset the Establishment and become blackballed by one of the most famous clubs in the world.

Windsor's irrepressible sense of humour comes shining through on every page, except when he gives chapter and verse on the personal crisis that drove him to plan suicide.

The Iron Duke is the no-holds-barred, warts-and-all story of a working-class Welsh folk hero who rose from humble beginnings to become a permanent member of the greatest Lions team in the history of rugby union.

As i have said in the title what you see is what you get and i would not have expected any less from Bobby Windsor.
I have known Bobby for many years from working with him in the steelworks and playing a few games with him in the steelworks side and his story and what he achieved makes you wonder what he would have been worth if he was playing today.
Playing in those days was not for the faint hearted and this comes over really well in the book,He has also delt well with the personal tragadies in his life.
A really good read

The Iron Duke: Bobby Windsor - The Life and Times of a Working-Class Rugby Hero
"The Iron Duke" is Bobby Windsor's story, a story about a rugby player from a previous era, before professionalism, when the sport was played by working class men for passion, glory and an almighty punch up if there was an opportunity. Bobby Windsor was a hooker, considered to be the best in the world at one time because of his ferocious tenacity, and he was a true master of "the dark arts" (front row "tactics"!!!!). This book will transport you back from today's sport to a time when a rugby player wasn't a gym reliant athlete, the nearest he got to a a post match de-brief was a sing-song on the journey home. In those times the opposition where "dealt with" on the pitch, not talked to by the ref, and after the game the rugby was left behind by both sides, traded in for a laugh and a pint. This is a hard hitting, hard punching book, just like the man himself, but it's also a tale of personal tragedy. Bobby Windsor has had more than his fair share of grief off the pitch and has had to use every bit of that rugby playing grit and determination to survive. Superb book and a great credit to the man himself. Loved it.

A rattling good read from beginning to end - good memories, clear insight, fabulous humour, far ranging, and straight talking over all the issues covered in a Golden Age of British, Welsh and Pontypool rugby. Reaches the tremendous highs of a superb rugby career and the heartbreaking lows experienced by personal tragedy with crystal clarity.Impossible not to feel pride at the achievements described and great sympathy for the hard road Bobby has travelled - thanks Bob, the memories and emotions all came flooding back.
