He kills the master of Pohjola, then is himself killed while returning home. His mother retrieves his body from the river of Death and his wife's love reawakens him to life. He flees to an island of women, who he id happy to entertain. In the meantime the men of Pohjola destroy his home. When he returns, he revenges himself by setting fire to Pohjola. ...The Iron Age ( Rauta-aika ) ( The Age of Iron )

4.0 out of 5 stars Uniquely Odd 24 Dec 2009
This four part television series, made in Finnish (though with English subtitles on this DVD), is based upon the Finnish epic, the Kalevala, which is itself based upon ancient mythology and folklore. Essentially this puts it is a genre similar to films like "Beowulf & Grendel", "Beowulf", "The Lord of the Rings", "The 13th Warrior" etc, but styalistically, it's worlds apart.

The most distinctive thing about this series is the lack of dialogue. Very little is used throughout the whole thing. Instead, it relies almost entirely upon the visual footage, containing many odd little quirks that remind me very strongly of the works of David Lynch. Overall, it's distinctly unique, atmospheric and very ahrd to pin down. A fairly enjoyable ride nonetheless.
