Product Description

Synopsis

This book explains and shows in detail the various techniques used by fiddle players in creating a traditional style of playing. All the information is presented in the context of the music itself, with numerous transcribed and recorded examples. For those unable to read music, a chapter on notation is included. Particular emphasis is given to bowing and ornamentation, with individual chapters devoted to Jigs, Slides, Polkas, Hornpipes, Airs and Reels. The book also attempts to convey something of the excitement felt in playing music, which has a large degree of improvisation, albeit within certain bounds. Includes demonstration CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really detailed and clearly presented book 24 May 2008
Format:Paperback
A fantastic book. Clearly explained, great diagrams and a wide range of pieces to practice. Great, if like me, you're been trained in a more traditional way on the violin and want to learn fiddling.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best 2 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback
Over the years I have bought many fiddle tutors...this is the best by far for learning irish fiddle, starting from basics and going on to embellishments and excellent tunes. You will need to buy the CD that accompanies the book though. There may be cheaper options out there, but don't waste your money, get this.

Yes, one of the best book and CD tutors going to help you learn to play fiddle with an Irish accent. But there's more support material out there for you:

Irish Session Tunes: The Red Book (book/CD)
Irish Session Tunes: The Red Book (Book/CD). Sheet Music, CD for All Instruments, Violin
Irish Session Tunes: The Red Book (Book/CD)
Irish Session Tunes The Red Book (book/CD) by Cranitch, Matt ( Author ) ON Aug-06-2009, Paperback

With CD! ~ this is, minus the one tune - #101 - "Henry McDermott Roe", Appendix A from Matt Cranitch's excellent fiddle tutor, "The Irish Fiddle Book" ~

The Irish Fiddle Book (CD Edition)

& the real PLUS, the reason I'm smiling as I recommend this, yet again, is the accompanying CD. The CD is made up of most of the tracks from two recordings that were produced to accompany "The Fiddle Book". They are "Take a Bow" OSS CD 5 & "Give it Shtick" OSS CD 6, Ossian Publications, 1988/1992:

Take a Bow & Give It Shtick: Irish Fiddle M

The CD provides recordings for 50 of the 100 transcriptions in the book, and it's great for just listening too - excellent ear training and soul stirring.
