NOEL HILL The Irish Concertina (1988 Irish 14-track LP of traditional Irish music that was voted Irish Folk Music album of the year picture sleeve with extensive sleeve notes in English. The sleeve shows minimal shelfware & the vinyl is flawless- A wonderful copy! CCF21)
I find it shocking there is only one review of one of the truly great Irish music albums.. The previous reviewer is hung up by the production but in truth it is very acceptable and not bad at all. What you cannot argue about is the spirit of the music. Noel Hill plays to the tradition. No contemporary flourishes for him he sticks to the old ways. This is a man who appeared on a radio interview with The Pogues and slagged them off as imitators. Hence the Pogues song 'Planxty Noel Hill'. I love the Pogues but love the art of this album. The emotion of this music is etched in every note. This album is one of the cornerstones of traditional Irish music. The Irish landscape feeds this music and is evoked by it. Buy it.
A very prompt and efficient service. Glad to have used this seller. The recording itself is an example of brilliant concertina-playing ruined by an obtrusive piano accompaniment - sadly, not unusual today in recordings of Irish traditional music!
