Product Description

Review

'Well-balanced, detailed and very readable, providing undergraduates and others with a clear and sound analysis of the war.' - Charles Tripp, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK

'...an excellent account...' - Asian Affairs

Product Description

The Iran-Iraq War was personified by the determination and ambition of the key leaders, Saddam Hussein and Ayatollah Khomeini, and characterised by mass casualties, the repression of the civilian populations and chemical warfare. Fought with lucrative oil money, it left the belligerents with crippling debts.

In this important reappraisal, Rob Johnson explores the major issues surrounding the war, offers a fresh analysis of the military aspects and assesses the far-reaching consequences for the wider world. It is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the ensuing conflicts in the reqion, including the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Good Introduction 20 Mar 2011
By S. Brannan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book was a solid introduction to the conflict at the strategic, national strategy level and I would rate it an excellent place to begin if (like myself) you are looking for more information on the Iran-Iraq War. It was well written and very easy to read, and was well documented so that further information could be found.

However, if you are interested in the tactical level of this conflict, that is not so well covered in this book. While all major battles are mentioned, not much more than a general description and the outcome of each is given. Tactical developments and forces used during the war are described, but without great detail. Furthermore, the conclusions section was relatively short and not very in depth.

Overall, this book gave me great overview, and although it is very readable, it left me wanting more.
Iran-Iraq War 1980s 21 Nov 2011
By William Garrison Jr. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
"The Iran-Iraq War: Twentieth-Century Wars" by Rob Johnson (2010), only 192 pages. This book was reviewed by Micah Levinson (American Foreign Policy Council) in the Fall 2011 "Middle East Quarterly" with a luke-warm liking. Mr. Levinson noted: "Johnson's book leaves largely unfulfilled its promise to explain "how the war shaped the region and set in motion the events that followed" .... Although Johnson claims that the time is ripe for a reappraisal of the conflict illuminated by over two decades of hindsight, the book relies too heavily on aging secondary sources and not enough on newly available primary ones.... Despite these shortcomings, Johnson does masterfully describe the military operations without getting bogged down in technical information. This book, along with Efraim Karsh's "The Iran-Iraq War", is a good primer on the brutal 8-year conflict. For a more technical account, consult Anthony H. Cordesman and Abraham R. Wagner's "The Lessons of Modern War, Vol. II: The Iran-Iraq War.""
