It's not often a book comes along that's so gripping you literally can't put it down (and I do mean literally - I even took it to the toilet with me!) but The Inventors is definitely one of them. I actually bought this for my daughter to read, but ended up nicking it off her, much to her annoyance. At 33 it's fair to say that I'm way past the book's target audience, but I'm basically just a sucker for a great story - and anyway why should kids have all the fun? Flatulent robots, blue headmasters, two-headed goats, and more gadgets than James Bond could shake a stick at... what else could you possibly want?
The Inventors is enormously entertaining, but it's also a really sweet book about friendship. The two main characters are hugely likeable in their different ways - poor Nate is rather disaster prone, while best mate Cat is taller and smarter, and queen of the killer one-liner. My daughter loves her! Like all the best children's books, The Inventors has a dark edge to it, but it's superbly handled and always tempered with humour. This is such a slick read, it's hard to believe the two authors (one of whom is only eleven) are first-time novelists. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll never look at a drinks can (or a chocolate brownie) in the same way again. Take the phone off the hook and put your feet up, you're in for a treat. Just don't let the kids get hold of it!!
