Product Description

Synopsis

An extraordinary novel of friendship and redemption, set in the Australian outback. Bernie Molloy has returned to her home town in the outback after years of reckless, abandoned living. Alone in her parents' old and neglected bungalow, with an evening job at the roughest bar in town, she wrestles with the demons of her past - and prepares to turn forty. Then a chance encounter with violence frightens Bernie into taking lodgers, and two very different men enter her life, to change it forever. Eddy Carpenter is a drifter, a gentle soul who turns out to have an unexpected aptitude for domesticity. John Roper is an English pilot who has come to Australia to live his dream, following in the footsteps of his dead father, a World War II hero. Gradually, as Bernie, Eddy and John settle into an uneasy yet strangely companionable routine, she dares to hope that this may mark the beginning of a new life.

I wasn't sure i was going to like this novel at first but after about 50 pages I began to really enjoy it. Unlike so many novels that deal with emotional issues such as grief, loss and love but are ultimately quite superficial and unsatisfying, this one goes into some depth and really gets to grips with these themes. The study of the inadequate english character John who gets bullied is very well-written - one can identify with his pain yet also find him very irritating. It also has some amazing descriptions of the australian landscape.

I had previously read Bel Mooney's 'Intimate Letters' some years ago which I really enjoyed. She is of course famous for her 'Kitty' books, but writes well for adults also.

Set in the Australian outback, this book was just over 300 pages long and I must admit I did wrestle with it for the first 100 pages and there were times when I considered putting it down. I am glad I didn't, although wrestling for a third of a book is too much for scene setting etc for me and I was disappointed by that. Once the book gathered pace it developed well into an interesting story about three slightly odd-ball characters, each with their own demons and who came together by chance.

A good read on the whole and quite an unusual and surprising story line which the author handles well.
