Product Description

Product Description

Enigmatic French drama, directed by Claire Denis. Sidney (Grégoire Colin) is reclusive and emotionally distant, whose only contact with people is a strange, wordless affair with a local pharmacist (Bambou), and an unspoken attraction to an aloof dog breeder (Beatrice Dalle). When a heart ailment forces Sidney to have a black-market heart transplant, the experience changes him completely. Rashly deciding to travel to Korea, Sidney ends up on a soul-searching voyage to his former home on Tahiti, in search of the son he fathered many years before.

Interesting film. Has moments of greatness and is often sumptuous to look at. The central character is not so much played as utterly lived by Michel Subor. This is way beyond mere acting. The slowness of the pace, the film's refusal to follow any kind of conventional narrative, the repetitiveness and the sheer banality of much of what we see onscreen, however, mean you'll need a sturdy filmic constitution to endure this one! But for those open to a bit of postmodernist, existential, (literally) heartless pseudery, there is much to enjoy and admire here.
A memorable film then, but one to avoid if you require easily digestible meanings or pat endings or simplisitc motivations.

Very nicely shot film, full of mystery and intrigue. Recommend if you're into slow, purposeful direction.

I admire the films of Claire Denis, however this one which i recently saw at the Southbank i found quite puzzling. The first half of the film was very atmospheric,a story of a man under pursuit. However the second part saw him on a mission which was vague in the extreme. No explanation in the film although the notes supplied by the bfi explained his motive.Baffled.

The film's visuals are strikingly beautiful, from forest scenes in the French mountains to the clear blue ocean of the South Pacific. The story? Well, it's the tale of a good-looking, weatherbeaten man in his late 60's with a weak heart and a shady past. After that...I have to admit that I couldn't discern any meaning or even attempt to comprehend what was going on. There is very little dialogue and I found the film disjointed and slow moving. I kept thinking that things would become clear as the film progressed, but try as I might, I couldn't link all the unrelated bits or separate the real from the imagined to form any sort of narrative. Definitely unconventional, and way beyond my intellect.
