Steve James' documentary the interrupters is pretty much the perfect documentary. In following the violence interrupters - men and women who prevent violent encounters or even murder by defusing volatile situations - we see a portrait of a city suffering from violence, a disease passed down from generation to generation. The job they are doing is wonderful in a city that has suffered as much as Chicago, especially with some of the intense face-offs they have to mediate and the positive effects that they have on people's lives. Where James excels is through presenting the violence interrupters with complete objectivity. When they fail at their job, we see their fragility of the community, the resolute grasp that anger has on the city, the inefficiency of the media and the political world. Most importantly for a dramatic piece, the film is a layered study into the complexity of the human mind. Even if it seems long at 2 hours, it has so much to say and so many stories to tell that I could have happily watched a mini-series on this brave and charismatic group of people. The best documentary I have ever seen and the best film of 2011.

I felt this was alot better than Hoop Dreams, and i loved hoop dreams. Its a very heart felt doc that really gets you to engage with the situations of people in the film. A brilliant doc that everyone should see regardless.

Depressing and boring. It went on and on about being poor and black...more like stupid and hopeless! Most black friends I have also found it a yawn.
