I have written this book for those computer users have been able to send a basic email and conduct a simple search of the Internet. The first book, Computing for the Older and Wiser, was written with the complete beginner in mind while this book takes the reader from the late beginner stage to intermediate computing skills. The same successful format is used with plenty of full colour explanatory screenshots, short chapter summaries and a revision quiz at the end of each chapter. The book is based on my 15 years experience of teaching the older generation how to use their home computers in private lessons, with Age Concern and the University of the Third Age. The content has, in many cases, been suggested by my many pupils.

This a must for those who can email effortlessly and surf surely but still get a bit muddled by hopeless help lines.
The internet and most of its works are explained step by step in plain unambiguous English avoiding a common temptation to take technical trips into egoland. The layout is relentlessly logical and so is the index and the list of internet links. The glossary is mighty useful and pruned to the essentials referred to in the book. As I am well into the third age (80 next birthday) the synapses are not what they were and the "brain training" pages are a good idea. I find the sections on Shopping, Travel and Digital Photography and Staying in Touch are excellent - these are what I mostly use the internet for - others will have other priorities of course. Shopping on line allows one to look for bargains and locations of local shops; much quicker than browsing the yellow pages. As an inveterate independent traveller I book my travel and accommodation and discuss itineraries on line without going anywhere near a UK travel agent. Last autumn we went off to Syria and made all the arrangements directly by email with a splendid Damascene taxi driver. Cost a fortune in printer ink though as Said insisted in replying using 24 point fonts. Save and edit digital photos effortlessly. Away with photo albums and the fading prints within. Adrian Arnold's book explains all. At the Amazon price quoted its a steal.

What I really like about this book is that it covers everything you need in a way that is quick to find and easy to grasp. No wading through endless jargon, the author takes a friendly approach to giving handy, relevant information. The glossary, index, internet link list by category, and topic summaries, all mean you can find what you need quickly and easily. Warnings and tips are presented in coloured boxes so it is easy to see if caution is needed, but apart from that you are encouraged to have fun with it. I have found out all sorts about things I hear mentioned on TV, the radio, and by family but never really knew much about - twitter, blogging, bluetooth. Although I would not try out everything in the book as the possibilities on the internet are endless, it's nice to know what people are talking about! Shopping online has been really useful (and tips on how to do this safely), getting road directions when travelling from A to B, saving and sending photos to friends and family, and how to access all the wonders that are out there (even researching your own family tree). This book makes what would otherwise be a daunting and off-putting task of understanding the ever mushrooming technology available, truly user friendly. If you are interested in what's out there, this will inspire you with confidence to have a go! Highly recommended.

A great book - not just for its target audience. Supposedly part of the 'computer generation' we still get confused with the wonders of the internet world!
This book is logical and explains everything plainly and eloquently. It is lighthearted but remains factual. There are some great illustrations which help to make it 'down to earth' and completely understandable.
We would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a helpful demonstration of the internet.
