5.0 out of 5 stars Subtle British Crime Drama at it's best 28 Oct 2006
A three-disc set that begins the TV dramatisation of the Inspector Lynley novels written by American author Elizabeth George, originally screened on the BBC in 2001 and 2002.

A Great Deliverance (2-part Pilot)

Here begins the story for the unlikely couple, the intellectual, smart and also aristocratic Inspector Lynley, and DS Havers, the fiery and often insubordinate loner, manipulated into this single opportunity to save her police career by the Scotland Yard top brass. Sent to take over a gruesome case in Yorkshire, the two are not only pressured into solving it, but must overcome their distinct differences in upbringing and background to work as an effective team.

Lynley himself struggles to come to terms with the recent marriage of his unrequited true-love to his best friend, while Havers' domestic situation with her ailing parents complicates her exertions to remain on the Force. To solve a particularly grisly murder in a remote farmhouse in a rural community, they have to delve deeply into the lives of the locals to discover what's occurred. Add to this a hostile local Police presence that resents Lynley's involvement, and there's plenty to watch out for here.

The production is well-shot, with some excellent camera work and direction. In particular, the sequences at the farmhouse almost have a Silence-of-the-Lambs quality, and the general air of claustrophobic secrecy, in a well-crafted contrast to the views of wide-open spaces of fields, farms and hills throughout, lends the story a distinct edginess. An excellent tale full of dark and brooding menace with a tragic outcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Series 1 24 Nov 2010
By Dr. H. A. Jones TOP 500 REVIEWER
This was the start in 2001 of a successful series of crime thrillers based on the novels of Elizabeth George. They involve the aristocratic Inspector Lynley (Nathaniel Parker) and his working-class Sergeant Barbara Havers (Sharon Small). This boxed set contains the pilot episode, A Great Deliverance, in two parts, and four other full-length (90 min) episodes. This gives plenty of time to develop the stories in an intriguing way that keeps you guessing 'who dunnit' to the end. The characters are well drawn and the stories engrossing. If you like detective fiction, these stories are thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL VIEWING!!!!!!!!!!!!! 30 Nov 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
It's a terrible shame that they have stopped making Inspector Lynley mysteries because they are SUPERB! As usual the series looks great, the acting is great and the story telling is first class. I would recommend all of these - from Series 1 - 6. You wont be disappointed.Fantastic delivery and service from Amazon as usual!

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as the later series 2 Oct 2010
Having never seen the early episodes, I wondered how they'd compare to Series 4 and 5. They're just as good, and I really enjoyed discovering how Havers and Lynley began partnering for cases, learning more about their personal backgrounds. The two-part pilot episode kept up the suspense level throughout.

Each mystery is unique and just as absorbing, suspenseful, and puzzling as ever. If you haven't seen these earlier episodes, they are well worth the purchase. The current price is an absolute bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Detective series ever! 7 Mar 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I don't know why they didn't make more of this series. As far as I am concerned it is very underated. The stories are first class with lots of twists and turns. But the relationship between Havers and Lynley is what makes this series extra interesting. Brilliant acting by one of my favourite acctress Sharon Small. If you like a good detective story you will LOVE this!

4.0 out of 5 stars detective fiction. 21 Aug 2013

I like this writer, transferring the Lynley series to TV must have been quite difficult, The result is very good, Havers in particular, not so sure about Helen, she seems to lack the charm and charisma of the character in the book. However, a very good series and one I would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant casting 12 Feb 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I never understod the long and slow style of British criminal series, but Inspector Lynley opened my eyes - created in classic British style with usually many suspects and rather dark corners of human nature this show is really brilliant. Also casting Sharon Small as Barbara Havers was work of genius - she just steals the show :)
