"The Inside Ring" starts with a thrilling attack on a US President, then follows the efforts of tough guy Joe DeMarco to find the assassins against a background of Washington power brokers. The structure of the book is curious: half political thriller, half crime novel, as Joe, helped by implausible tough-woman-with-a-past Emma, travels to Georgia to uncover a conspiracy. Some of the scrapes Joe gets into are a bit hackneyed, and the climax is disappointing. But on the way, the writing is lively and the plot twists unexpected.
Summary: original, engaging thriller with a few weaknesses.
