Product Description

London 1841: a city on the edge. Corruption is everywhere. The poor are starving in the streets. The wealthy fear an explosion of anarchy and insurrection.

Amidst the turmoil, a wealthy merchant and his spoiled, beautiful ward hire former Bow Street Runner Jack Brodie to recover incriminating documents from the lawless rogues that robbed them. It is no easy task even for a man with Brodie's criminal connections because an old and vicious enemy has returned from the penal colony of New South Wales seeking vengeance for the slaying of his brother. As Brodie hunts through the thieves dens hidden in the rookeries of Dickensian London, it is only a matter of time before their paths cross and murderous violence ensues.

The Inquiry Agent is a dark detective tale set in the early Victorian period by bestselling author William King.

Hard boiled detectives and the dirty rookeries of Victorian London are a combination so natural that I wonder they haven't come together more often. William King's detective sets off down streets where Sherlock Holmes wouldn't be seen dead, but probably only because his body would have been rendered for fat before it got cold.
This is satisfying noire, with a driven hero, an old enemy, and a remorseless pace that drags you through the fog like a bull-terrier on a choke chain.
Go buy it.

I must say that the review is based on the fact I paid nothing for this book, as it came free one day for my Kindle. It is amazing. Very well written, doesn't bore you to death and it is superbly well written from an historical point of view. Recommended to anyone as drama, detective story and history fans. Moreover descriptions make it almost suitable for a film script without boring to death like Walter Scott's. Thanks to Amazon for the privilege to read it for free.

Like other reviewers the comparison to Sherlock Holmes is not hard to make, but only because of the period (although this is some 50 years before him) and the hard times during the London of Victorian times, this at the beginning of her reign and Holmes at the end - and there the comparison's end.

For me this is as good as a Sherlock Holmes book, if not better. Our hero Jack Brodie an ex Bow Street Runner turned Inquiry Agent (read detective) investigates a burglary committed by lowlife types from the worst areas of London, a place where the poorest inhabit amids the grime and filth of a Dickensian London.

The writing is very good and easily transports you to 1840's London and gives you a good feel for the characters. I really felt for Jack Brodie who has his own problems with a sickly child, a dead wife and Billy Tucker after him who believes he killed his brother Bobby, when Jack was a bow street runner.

I got this book free on kindle and probably wouldn't have bought it from reading the description, however I will certainly be buying books from this author especially if he makes a series out of Jack Brodie as I think this could run and run....

The book was ok just an airport lounge read, nothing too much going on, a time filler with some interest
