Review

[of Feather Boy] Cleverly and economically written, this witty, observant and moving book is a comic and contemporary drama about courage, love, memory and the power of stories. (Sunday Times (where it was chosen as Children's Book of the Week). )

impressive . . . moving and unsentimental. (Observer (where it was Children's Choice) )

This is one smart read - and you'll never guess the ending. (Mizz magazine )

a brilliant novel . . . really does merit the category title of Book You Cannot Put Down.' (Ian Hislop (member of the Blue Peter judging panel) )

The Bookseller, August 12, 2005

Unusual and provocative story about life after death…/ Thought provoking and horribly topical.

"The Innocent's Story" by Nicky Singer is a book about a girl called Cassina who was blown up to pieces in a station bomb and killed. Except she wasn't completely dead as she becomes a Para-spirit, this means she can live in other peoples thoughts but not able to change them. She then finds herself in her killers head and realises that she is about to do something terrible, worse than the station bomb and Cassina tries to stop her killer. But how can she is she is powerless to interfere with their thoughts? If you want to know more read this book as it is really good.

"The Innocent's Story" is a book that keeps you hooked till the very end making you want to read more. This book is an unforgettable read as it encounters you with death, love and noble responsibility. I would recommend this book to absolutely everybody as it is a brilliant read. "The Innocent's Story" is an astonishing read which makes you believe you are actually there!

Despite a slightly understated title, this was an amazing novel.

Cass and her younger sister are killed in a terrorist bombing, only...Cass isn't quite dead. She becomes a vapour-like entity that must live in the minds of others in order to survive, and despite her helplessness, she finds herself drawn in to a situation that possibly only she can prevent, and in doing so might just be able to save herself. The themes of death, greif, life beyond death and the resiliance of humans were spun together to create an amazingly insightful, refreshing book. The different minds of the characters that Cass visits make an interesting balance. Definitely get this book.

terrorism again 19 Aug 2007

Cassina Dixon is 13 and dead. She narrates her existence after being killed in a terrorist bombing which also kills her little sister. As a "para-spirit," she passes through a bunch of people, including the actual bomber and his religious zealot of a boss who wants him to bomb again.
This is a fairly unique take on the whole life after death, hovering above thing. The ending is rather good, but I didn't feel like I really deeply knew the characters well enough to make this a great book. It will be an easy sell to the teens though!
