Don't get me wrong, I love Sara Douglass; I can't count the number of times I've read all six books from the Axis Trilogy and the Wayfarer Redemption. (I even ordered the second trilogy from Australia because it wasn't yet available in the States.) But this one? Disappointing.

I thought this was supposed to conclude a trilogy, but there's clearly more to come. Perhaps that helps explain the odd, unsatisfying conclusion to the multiple plot threads and characters introduced in The Serpent Bride and The Twisted Citadel.

I'm glad I read it because I'm always curious about her characters, I suppose. But I'd rank this book -- this series, in general -- far below her first six works.
Loved it! 27 Mar 2012

I loved this trilogy! I particularly loved this book, which is the third in the trilogy. And I loved, loved, loved how she ended it! I would have given it five stars had the editing been better.

Sara Douglass gives us a nice, solidly written trilogy that is complete and could stand alone without the first two trilogies. We get to see some old favorite characters from the previous sets and we get to meet some new folks who you either love or hate with absolute abandon. We also did not end up with another whiny sort-of heroine whom we know we are supposed to root for but just can't quite make ourselves. (Ah-hem. Faraday.)

The author left things wide open for another trilogy. With how she tends to write them, we won't see it (if she writes it at all) until all three are complete or nearly so. This is why I loved how she ended it. It's a nice, clean ending that does not leave the story hanging. And she left plenty of fodder for imagination while we sit and hope she does write us some more Incarii tales.

The only spoiler I'm going to give is to say that I hope she writes some short stories because I want to know what new mischief Axis and his god-buddy Isaiah get into. Because you know these two are going to get neck-deep into something. They just can't help themselves.

This was the finale to the Dark Glass Mountain series and it was a really nice conclusion. I would recommend this series to anyone who wants a unique feel to a fantastical setting with a pretty good fluffy story. It wasn't a daunting read at all. It is a series you can breeze right through.
