I am quite recent to the world of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, but what a world! Within that short time I have bought every CD I could.

"The Inevitable" is an amazing album for many reasons. The best of which may be that every time I play it I can't help but smile. The lyrics to songs like "La Grippe" always make me chuckle no matter how many times I listen to it, and it has hardly been off my stereo since buying it.

A second reason for loving the album is the voice of Katharine Whalen which is illustrated wonderfully on the tracks "Anything But Love", "You're Drivin' Me Crazy" and "Wished For You" amongst others. Having said that I even love the instrumental track "Lugubrious Whing Whang" though I am not usually fond of instrumentals.

If you buy "The Inevitable" be prepared to play it a few times before it sinks in, and then when it has just try and sit still when you listen to it, I never can.

Towards the end of the nineties swing music became one of the biggest styles of music in America with bands like Brian Setzer Orchestra, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and The Cherry Poppin' Daddies leading the revolution. Squirrel Nut Zippers are in a similar mould to all of these great bands but their style is really a mix of the sounds of thirties and forties jazz with modern punk rock, these two styles combining a unique and infectious style of music. The album is really a mix of the roots of American music like bluegrass and jazz meeting the current style of American rock. The album was recorded at the studio of U2 producer Daniel Lanois and there is no doubt that he had some sort of influence over the albums' brilliant sound, which in unmatched in music today, its fresh, its hot and the album definitely has a party feel to it. The album is generally uptempo but the tracks "It Ain't You" and "Blue Angel" are obvious exceptions and just go to show that the band are brilliant whether hey are fast or slow.

Lord that's why they call me Wash Jones 21 Oct 2000
By Ryan Costantino - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Here it is, the debut full-length album from the modern masters of jazz and swing The Squirrel Nut Zippers! Every song is a masterpiece and I must have listened to this album straight through hundreds of times, it's that good.

"Lovers Lane" is a beautiful, upbeat love song

"Danny Diamond" takes on a more sinister tone, with haunting vocals by Katharine Whalen

"I've Found A New Baby" is a fun mix of jumping percussion and exciting lyrics

"Anything But Love" is another sugar coated confection brought to life by Katharine Whalen

"Good Enough For Grandad" just makes you wanna get up and dance

"Wished For You" shows Whalen's soulful side

"La Grippe" is great, macabre fun

"Lugubrious Whing Whang" is a devilish instrumental

"Club Limbo" is dark and bluesy

"Wash Jones" is my favorite song on the album, poetic and spooky

"You're Drivin' Me Crazy" shows Whalen's range, from Billie Holiday reflective to Betty Boop electric

"Plenty More" is almost a promise to fans of more magic to come as well as a satirical look at kinky sex practices

The Inevitable is an essential album for fans of jazz, talented musicians, and FUN! One of the best albums of the 1990's!

One of the best... period. 28 April 2003

When I started listening to the Zippers (many a year ago) I fell in love with their style and grace -- and was even more impressed by their reimagining of a great old sound. "The Inevitable" is their first wide release, and it still stands as a their best recording to date. This was the wonder-years of the Zippers, before they caught fire with "Hot" and well before the exit of Tom Maxwell. This is their rawest, most un-produced best (and if you think that over-production makes music better... it never does for jazz acts).
This album goes from the ecstatic (Good Enough for Grandad) to the sultry (Danny Diamond) to the just plain amazing (Wash Jones - one of the best recent songs in the "le jazz hot" tradition). If you like what you hear on "Hot" or "Perennial Favorites," then "The Inevitable" will not let you down. Just sit down with a mint julep and prepare for a great album.

This is the Zipper's BEST album! I own them all and this one is definately my favorite one. Nothing can compare with Katharine's vocals on "You're Driving Me Crazy" and "La Grippe" is just CRAZY!!! Buy this CD!
