Book Description

22 Mar 2011 039333936X 978-0393339369
Birth is not inevitable. Life certainly isn't. The sole inevitability of existence, the only sure consequence of being alive, is death. In these eloquent and surprising essays, twenty writers face this fact, among them Geoff Dyer, who describes ghost bikes in memory of those who die in biking accidents; Jonathan Safran Foer, proposing a new way of punctuating dialogue in the face of a family history of heart attacks and decimation by the Holocaust; Mark Doty, whose reflections on the art-porn movie Bijou lead to a meditation on the intersection of sex and death epitomised by the AIDS epidemic; and Joyce Carol Oates, who writes about the loss of her husband and faces her own mortality. Other contributors include Annie Dillard, Diane Ackerman, Peter Straub, Brenda Hillman and Terry Castle.

Review

[A] diversity of views, yet a consistently high level of thought. Their eloquent introduction sets up these pieces, several of them previously published. Suffusing the collection as a whole is the humility expressed by Lynne Tillman at the end of her essay: "Of death, mortals are absolutely ignorant. The dead, fortunately, are beyond caring." Ultimately, these readings may bring the reader some comfort to realize, perhaps again, that we are all in this together. --Alan Moores

2.0 out of 5 stars Death....the big taboo 6 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
Most the writers wrote having had some one they loved die. Their reflections on death in most cases seemed to skirt round the subject and just wanted to demonstrate what clever writers they are. They did not seem to wont to confront the subject of dying and how it affected or upheld their own belief system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death is only the jumping off point 5 Jun 2011
By Kendra S Eisenstark - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Each contributing writer in this collection begins with the idea of death, but that isn't necessarily what the essays are about. There is an essay on flies, an essay about language, an essay about searching for lost things. Death affects everyone differently, and this is well-represented in The Inevitable.

I was blown away by a few of the essays. Others were not what I had hoped from those writers. All in all, however, this is a fantastic read and highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unique 23 April 2011
By Lori - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Not exactly what I expected and probably better that way. The individual writers are able to go into detail about topics of which they would never have the opportunity to share otherwise (except possibly with their therapist). It was definitely interesting and some of the stories extremely unusual.
