Product Description

When Robin was a boy, fishing with his father was an integral and much-loved part of family holidays, but as an adult he fished infrequently, with terrible technique and rare success. Until one day, feeling inspired to supplement the vegetables from his allotment with nature's free bounty, fish, he tentatively decided to try again. Full of dizzy excitement at all the equipment available - the rods, the reels, the rigs, the lures, the tackle box complete with light in its lid, into which everything packed so beautifully - he embarked on his journey as a born-again angler. What follows is a funny, touching and even informative book about Britain's most popular sport. From beachcasting off the stormy Pembrokeshire coast to flyfishing for trout in tranquil Hertfordshire, Robin shares his experiences, his successes and failures, and even some of his favourite recipes. Along the way he discovers exactly why anglers feel so passionate about their chosen sport.

Too many "readable" books about fishing are written for the US market, or for fly fishermen, or for nostalgic, sentimental dreamers. Here is a refreshing change from that: a book written in the UK about good honest sea angling with only a bit of trout fishing sneaking in at the end. It even starts with an account of fly fishing for bass from a kayak - how contemporary is that for goodness sake? Written by a guy who thinks like we should be thinking but writes it down a lot better than most, this book will have you laughing, pondering, reminiscing and vowing to go fishing again. He re-discovers pier, rock, beach, boat and fly fishing and tells it in a way that will have experienced anglers nodding sagely and non-anglers following every word. Quite a talent. Robin also knows exactly how and when to take the gentle micky: Aaampsheer versus Hampshah; a certain Total fishing magazine; vegetarianism, fellow anglers and sleepy seaside establishments all come under his scrutiny. Anyone who elegantly refers to his dog as Charley-merde-tete can't be at all bad. He can cook too.

This is a very entertaining account of one man's rediscovery of fishing. He's a very funny writer and his easy going style makes it a pleasure to read. His recollections of childhood, descriptions of of pouring over adverts, nervously ordering gear hoping not to be exposed as a complete novice, and the childlike excitement of waiting for his tackle struck plenty of chords. He has a wicked sense of humour and his scrutiny of various topics will have you laughing out loud. The Charley-merde-tete line was a corker and is indicative of just how sharp Shelton is.

He manages top capture the magic of fishing on a personal level and distil it into a very entertaining and honest account. Can't wait for his next.
