Quite a change after the onslaught that was felt on the previous album (Next!) and some might say a bit risky. Not so as this album is considered pure genius and it is clear that things are maturing nicely. Different syles are explored and the musicianship seems a lot lighter. Some of the guitar work from Zal Cleminson is brilliant, just listen to 'Weights Made Of Lead'. Not many could get away with such an epic as 'Anthem' either with its pipes and drums. Wherever Alex is now - THANKYOU!

If you are a fan of SAHB you will need no convincing to buy this album. SAHB always entertain in their performances, this is no exception. I saw them live in '74, this brings back fond memories of a great performer. I hear the music and I can see Alex Harvey on stage larger than live R.I.P. Long live rock 'n' roll.

an eternal favorite 15 Aug. 2001
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

i first heard alex harvey when i was in eighth grade... i had just started listening to alternative radio, and lo and behold: vambo! a distinctly vivid light went on in my head at the time and my appreciation of music began its' ascent into the "unusual". i lost most of my pre-pubescent mind til i got my hands on the album - and thankfully, never really recovered since! i'm relieved to see it can be replaced on cd, since my copy was accidentally destroyed many years ago. my long, sad search is over; and i can hardly wait to hear vambo, anthem, and all the rest once more!!!! this stuff is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! DO NOT pass it up.

Finally... 23 Jun. 2001

...I've found this (again)! I used to own the album, so many years ago. It was one of my favorites but I wore it out, then lost it to who knows where; that black hole that eats the things that were once of great value, but temporarily forgotten in the rush of living. It was out of print the last few times I checked. I can't wait 'till it arrives (digitally remastered!!!) so I can hear all of those great tunes again! Alex Harvey was a singular artist. His unique and extaordinary style landed him in a class with some others that we lost too soon: Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jim Morrison...

Can't get enough of this.... 27 July 1999

SAHB at their zany best. A very light sound compared to their live album of several years later. Nonetheless, it has some of the bands best remembered songs and covers a wide variety of musical styles. Man in the Jar, Weights made of Lead, The Impossible Dream and Anthem do it for me.

The very essence of Alex Harvey is in this album. 4 July 1999

From "Vambo" to the warm and moving "Hey", this is truly Alex Harvey at his best. I'm grateful I live in Cleveland where Alex Harvey is still actually heard on the radio almost daily. Alex Harvey is who God would listen to if God had a radio,(and lived in Cleveland). The Swedes have a term for Alex Harvey's style, "Vorgesetzler". I think that says it best.

The Best of British 2 Jun. 2002
By John Moulis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
My first encounter with Mr Harvey's music came early 1975 when I heard the short version of Anthem on my local AM station. I rushed out to buy the 45 and played it thinking that it was a pleasant piece of music. It wasn't until a few weeks later when I took the single out again and put the wrong side on the turntable that I was gobsmacked - for there on the B-side was the long version of Anthem, one of the most stunning pieces of music I had ever heard. I played it over and over, totally forgetting about the truncated A-side which by that stage had left the charts after two or three weeks. This album contains both the short and long version of Anthem and is worth buying for that track alone. It's a track that comes charging crisp and clear through the speakers with all the hope and dynamism of the early 70s through the prism of the current millennium. It really is one of rock music's most underrated achievements.
