The year's most explosive crime thriller: Former US government assassin and Hong Kong Police enforcer Mike Delaney joins an esoteric monastic brotherhood to discover his spiritual self until he falls in love and marries.

Then his journalist wife is ritually murdered by a contract serial killer known as 'The Priest' – because she was close to uncovering a global plot known as 'The Renaissance Project'. 'The Priest' is part of the conspiracy, a transvestite who abducts, violates and murders scores of young women. He leaves no trace, no DNA not even a drop of sweat.

Delaney will never stop until he tracks down 'The Priest' and infiltrates the labyrinthine 'Renaissance Project' – the world's most exclusive 'club' whose members are the global super rich and powerful who seek immortality at any price and at all costs.

Delaney's former partner, wheelchair-bound Bob Messenger, has created – a global crime busting website where ordinary people fight back against scams, crime and injustice, each with their own code name. Delaney is known as 'The Monk'.

Delaney has sworn never to kill again but to seek peace and spiritual fulfilment. But fate and the loss of the woman he loved drive him to use his consummate investigative and physical skills to track down her killer and the organisation that ordered her execution. When it comes to it and he finally confronts 'The Priest', will he keep his vow or execute terminal revenge?

5.0 out of 5 stars Delaney has arrived 19 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
From the outset, I want to say that this was great - fast paced, punchy, exactly what is says on the tin. which set the scene beautifully for the following action. As for Delaney, what's not to love? He's Irish-American, big, fast, fit, smart, honourable, good in bed, a trained killer, and he loved his wife. There is detail, great movement and tone, and the atmosphere was perfect. I think the author has created a really strong hook to hang all this on with Delaney. He is called The Monk on a crime busting website created by his buddy called confess-[...]. This is a very clever idea because it means a never ending supply of plots.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Immortality Plot by David Callinan 7 Feb 2012
By Quaser
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a review of [ASIN:B00624WKPQ The Immortality Plot by David Callinan]

This is a fast-paced book, with many twists and turns, and is recorded from the viewpoints of a number of characters.

The main story revolves around the efforts of Mike Delaney, a former soldierG-Force special agent and Policeman, to find the killer of his wife, who was an investigative reporter. Delaney had become disillusioned with his life after a failed Police mission in Hong Kong, and goes to a retreat where he becomes a Master of the martial art of Tai Chi, before leaving this life and falling in love.

This book introduces us to the world of The Priest, who Delaney believes is not only a serial killer but also the person who killed his wife, and of The Monk, who is intent on tracking him down.

Delaney also believes that the reason his wife was murdered in a most horrific fashion was because she became aware of the existence of a secret organisation who were offering the very rich the chance of 'immortality'.

In some ways this is a good thriller, but personally, I found that some of the plot devices used to move the story along were a little contrived.

I had some trouble suspending my disbelief enough to truly see the offer being made to those rich enough to buy 'immortality' as very likely but this aside, it was an acceptable read. I am looking forward to reading other books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last something different! 30 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read the sample of this book on Amazon as I'd never heard of it and the brief synopsis interested me. I think you get about the first 4 or 5 chapters but by the end of these I was totally gripped and purchased the kindle version immediately. The main characters had been very nicely defined and I hoped that the rest of the book would continue at the same break neck speed as the start - I was not disappointed! Delaney is a bit like Jack Reacher - but with more depth and layers, and Lucius Gynt is one creepy guy who will give you nightmares!
I read the whole book in two sittings, and am already looking forward to further installments. With the bookshelves now full of chick lit, minor celebrity autobiographies or the same old writers churning out the same old sequel after sequel, - it was refreshing to find an unknown (to me) author with a real flair for story telling.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Immortality Plot - A fast moving story. 5 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I really did enjoy this book. I thought it was well written and the story flowed along nicely and was easy to follow. If I have any complaint about it then it has to be that there were occasional words missing which made me stop and think but it was obvious what these words should be so it really was not a great problem. This may have been caused when the book was converted to Kindle format or whatever, I don't really understand these things. If it was through the actual writing of the book then it really should not have happened. This is the reason that I only give 4 stars though. Having said that I really did enjoy the read.
Without giving too much away, the story is about an ex secret agent in America and his efforts to catch a serial killer who has killed his wife. It is also about 'people cloning' and a secret group involved in this. The whole story comes together nicely and from an early start it is plain to see the direction the story will take. It comes together well at the end and in fact has quite a good ending.
I will also say that if I had read the book description on Amazon before I read this, I may have thought twice about it. I feel the description is over the top and sounds a bit far fetched. Actually I felt it did not do the book justice but that is only my opinion. This is the second book I have read by this author and I will certainly be looking for more books by him

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Thriller! 20 April 2012
By NLE - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Mike Delaney was a hard, take no prisoners type of guy - until his wife was murdered and their baby died with her. He had been nearly murdered in China while working as a cop; worked before that for a group that didn't have a name and survived but Maria's murder? That did him in. He left their house for a monastery high in the California hills, where he meditated, practiced Tai Chi and other arts until time came he had to do something else. Find the murderer of his wife.

She had been a journalist with a home office he didn't intrude on but, after the fire he had sense enough to move what was left of her computer and files somewhere else until the investigation was done. Until the public's mind was distracted by the next big thing - The Priest. He took lovely young women, made them confess on tape to a myriad of sins and then put the tape in their mouths and killed them. His newest offerings had a cross cut into their backs.

All clues and other disappearances somehow lead to a charity funder called LifeForce International but how? Mike risks everything to find out and, at the end, the surprise is his. You have to read this thriller! It never stops surprising and making you think you've got the answer when, in fact, you've got no clue at all!

This was an excellent book. I enjoyed the entire story and all of it's side plots. Kind of scary to think there might be people out there that could do this, and it certainly sounded plausible. Looking forward to another Delaney book!
5.0 out of 5 stars Shall We Keep This Villain For Delaney to "Toy" With? I vote Yes! 8 Jun 2012
By GABixler - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
In a recent article, David Callinan talks about whether a villain should ever be continued. Callinan had just published the first novel in this new Mike Delaney Thriller. I do enjoy series, and Mike Delaney is a man who definitely is one to capture your attention!...

The Villain? Well, he wasn't caught in the first book, so even though he was worthy of hatred, I believe he should at least be "captured" before readers will be happy.

Although...this villain is quite unique and very good in The Immortality Plot...

The media has dubbed him "The Priest" which is rather ironic since Mike Delaney is using The Monk as a moniker... By the way, I've read all four of Callinan's thrillers so far and have been intrigued with his use of some sort of spiritual connection for each of his main characters, the latter because he has spent time studying in an oriental monastery... I'll let you find out why and how the villain has been so named, but I will tell you that he leaves absolutely nothing behind and is a contract assassin, but he also is a serial killer who murders for fun as well...

The concept of searching for immortality by the rich and powerful is not new, but everything else in this novel is, at least in my experience. As mentioned earlier, Mike Delaney is definitely unique--a sympathetic character who is easy for both men and women, I am sure, to enjoy. Mike had been saved during time in the service by his friend Bob Messenger, who was hit by a sniper instead of Delaney. Messenger is an important minor character, at least in this first novel. He is now confined to a wheel chair and has started a computer site which pulls together people across the world to gather, work or talk about unsolved crimes. It is Messenger who contacts Mike to get him involved in the latest of a series of murders of young women.

A tape has been loaded on their site from someone who claims to have murdered Maria Montalban (Mike's wife who worked under a different name). There was no choice--Mike Delaney would find this villain!

I love when there are a number of different plots to move a story forward. There is the relationship between Mike and Messenger, who saved his life... Then there are those that are "waiting in line" to be next to be given the immortality they crave, no matter that it takes another's life to do it...and then there is the villain! Although there is not much sexuality in the book, the multiple characters played by The Priest (he is a transvestite) is fascinating and, having created such a unique character, it is no wonder that the author is wondering whether to keep him to torture us throughout the series. I vote to go for it! But please make sure he's suitably disposed of by Mike before the series ends! I want to be there! This novel is a prime example of the good and evil in humanity. Fortunately, The Monk has The Priest on the run as this novel closes... Can't wait to see what happens!

Highly recommended!
