Product Description

Based on Nobel Prize–winning genetic research–a simple plan to keep your telomeres healthy for better health and longevity

Telomeres play an important role in protecting our chromosomes from critical damage. The shortening of the telomere disrupts vital cellular function and promotes the previously seemingly inevitable onset of aging and various diseases, including cancer and Alzheimer′s. Drawing from the groundbreaking discoveries about telomeres that won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine, this book includes a highly prescriptive program that shows you how to live longer by slowing telomere shortening and rejuvenating your cells through relatively simple alterations in nutrition habits and other lifestyle changes.

  • Written by authors with extensive knowledge of genetics, telomeres, and longevity
  • Offers a simple action plan you can start using immediately
  • Includes a revolutionary new eating plan
  • Recommends individualized supplement programs
  • Shares a diet and exercise approach grounded in solid scientific research

The exciting recent discoveries about telomeres promise to revolutionize our approach to anti–aging much as antioxidants did ten years ago. Unlike trendy diet and fitness books with no basis in science, The Immortality Edge targets health at its innermost level by laying out a realistic, lifelong plan using easy steps that can fit into any busy schedule–steps that can improve the length and quality of your life.

From the Inside Flap

Based on the science behind the health breakthrough that won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine, The Immortality Edge is the book that shares the priceless secrets to your long and healthy life.

When Carol Greider, Elizabeth Blackburn, and Jack Szostak won the Nobel Prize for their pioneering research on telomeres and telomerase, few people at the time outside the scientific world understood the truly life–changing implications of their work and how their amazing discoveries could be used to slow aging and the onset of diseases like Alzheimer′s and cancer. The first popular book on this huge breakthrough, The Immortality Edge translates the latest research into a highly prescriptive program that will show you how to live a longer and more vital life by protecting your telomeres.

Telomeres keep our chromosomes intact, in the manner of the plastic caps that hold the ends of shoelaces together. As cells divide and replicate, telomeres eventually shorten; when they become too short, cells die. The great news is that you can slow telomere shortening and rejuvenate your cells by making relatively simple health and lifestyle changes. This extraordinary book shows you how, step by step.

Written by authors with extensive knowledge of genetics, telomeres, and longevity, The Immortality Edge gives you a complete program that incorporates specific recommendations regarding supplements, diet, stress–reduction techniques, and exercise. For each component of the program, you′ll find clear explanations of the science behind the recommendations along with guidance and advice on how to implement them. The Immortality Edge is fully backed by the most up–to–date research findings and includes:

  • A two–phase supplement plan with detailed explanations and dosage information

  • Techniques that will reduce stress at the cellular level, improve your concentration, and help you sleep better

  • Eating guidelines to safeguard your telomeres, including the top twenty telomere–friendly foods

  • Fourteen days of meal plans

  • Fitness plans tailored to your own fitness level that combine interval, endurance, and resistance training advice

Long, healthy telomeres hold the key to a longer, healthier life. Start taking advantage of the Nobel Prize–winning breakthrough and give yourself the immortality edge—here and now.

Most of what is in the book is already on the internet. The book appears to contradict itself and the the chapter on nutrition does not appear well researched or with an appropriate bibliography for its conclusions. It appears that different opinions are held by the three authors. Very disappointed with the information.

Youth is not just for the Young! 2 Dec 2010
By Rita A Wilds - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Telomeres are everywhere in the news lately. Just yesterday the Wall St. Journal featured an article about mice that were growing younger. Last year the Nobel prize was awarded to scientists researching telomeres and telomerase and how they cause us to grow old. But does anyone without a PhD have any idea what a telomere is? I suspect it has something to do with staying forever young- and sure, I want that - but how does the telomere thing apply to ME? How do I make it happen? Read this book and it tells you how! Step by step.

The authors are experts in the field, and give an in-depth and easy to understand description of what the telomere is, what it does, and why it is so important. They believe that immortality is right around the corner and soon people will be able to live long past age 120. They aren't kooks, though. They maintain that it's our responsibility to take optimal care of ourselves through diet, fitness, meditation and stress reduction, so we can take full advantage of what science will eventually have to offer.

The book gets into detail about what you can do right now in the way of supplements that are already available and are being developed to lengthen telomeres. (These aren't called drugs because the FDA doesn't recognize aging as a disease). But they're expensive and most people aren't going to run out and buy them anyway. So that's not the point of the book. The real value in The Immortality Edge is the longevity plan it maps out. The authors have developed a very specific diet, supplement and workout plan. I'm an avid reader of fitness and anti-aging material, and this is one of the best and most applicable lifestyle plans that I've seen in a long time. It's very realistic and perfect for those of us over-40,50,60, 70 even. So many workout books seem focused on youth for the young, but this one's focused on youth for everyone.

Slowly, I'm adopting their advice into my daily routine -Fish oil, COQ10, sprint workouts, meditation etc. My favorite part was the 70 question survey called "What's Your Telomere Age?" It's a very comprehensive examination of your lifestyle and how it's been affecting your aging process. You might be surprised. Whether or not I make it to 120, who knows, but at least we can maximize our health and quality of life while we're here. And this book is a great way to get started.

I strongly suggest caution ... 16 Jan 2011
By Dax D. Carver - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
First off, I realize that I am overwhelmingly outnumbered as there are twenty-something five-star reviews. The book has only been out since December of 2010, and so there hasn't been time for the book to be critically reviewed by the medical or scientific community. I am not attacking any reviewer personally, I am simply suggesting caution.

After reading the book myself, I felt compelled to write a less-than-positive review, not because I know for certain that the information is incorrect, but simply based on the extreme lack of verifiable information in the book. Since I happen to live near the University of California in San Francisco, I have contacted Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn's lab to find out her and her associates' own views on the suggestions in this book, as I've found none in my research. Until then, I am giving the book 3 stars. If she or her lab gets back to me with positive accounts, then I will change my initial review.

First of all, let me say that Greta Blackburn is not Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn. I doubt that the authors are trying to confuse readers, but I can easily see how the cursory reader would confuse the two. Dr. Blackburn, Dr. Greider, and Dr. Stozstak in fact did win the Nobel Prize in 2009 for their research on telomerase and telomeres, however they are not associated with the authors of this book in any way that I have been able to find. I, of course, could be wrong. As far as I know, the only suggestion Dr. Blackburn has ever made concerning healthy telomere length is the reduction of chronic stress.

A red flag that I found was the abnormally high doses of supplements suggested by these authors in their "practical" program. The amounts are far above the normal recommendations. Yet, that isn't the main cause of concern for me. It doesn't take long to realize that the authors continuously claim that you can't trust any supplement company save the ones for sale on Dave Woynarowski's own website. In fact, I've been unable to locate the suggested super multivitamins with such high levels of components anywhere else. Please, speak to your physician or a registered dietitian before beginning any program that suggests you take 6,000 mg of fish oil, super mega vitamins, etc.

Thirdly, the subject of TA-65 is a tricky one. Do some research. There's truly not much out there on the subject. Read articles from trusted sources and you'll quickly realize that many in the scientific and medical community say that the effect of TA-65 on telomere length is indeed positive, but it is not great and the far-reaching effects of the supplement are unknown. I'd suggest, as a logician, that you wait for more information to be published before spending thousands of dollars per year on a supplement that is so little researched.

For now, that is my review. Again, I'll be happy to change my review once true experts have been able to critically review the information and I hear back from the Blackburn lab. As for now, I simply suggest you proceed with caution.

The Bible Of Anti Aging. A Must Read For Anyone Over 30 2 Jan 2011
By Dave Lakhani - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I read a lot of books on health and life extension and I find many of them to be over-hyped and nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to get you to buy more of their programs. This book was completely different. I was hooked the minute I did the Telomere Age Test On Page 17 - 18, I'll bet you'll be as surprised as I was when you take the test. It takes about 3 minutes to do but it will open your eyes to your REAL age.

As an older father of a six year old daughter I started researching anti aging in earnest last year. I wanted to see if there were practical things I could do to extend my viable years with my daughter. During that search I came across different things by all the authors but was struck by information I learned at Dr. Dave Woynarowski's website, drdavesbest.com. That is where I was first exposed to information on Telomeres.

When this book came out I consumed it in a day. I found it to be incredibly valuable in explaining not only how my body REALLY aged but it gave very practical, easy to implement strategies for extending your life. Strategies that are based in science and research but broken down into layman language with step by step processes virtually anyone can implement. The information on Fish Oil and Meditation alone was worth the price of the book but what really intrigued me was the information on how to turn on Telomarase.

The book also introduced me to the idea of Health Span vs. Life Span. One of the things people always ask when you tell them you are working on extending your life is "Why would you want to be old so long?" But the ideas in the book is to not only increase your life span but your health span, the amount of time you can live fully, vitally, and in good health. The idea is to remain active and vital and when it is time to die, to not linger in a long drawn out death or live with disease. I find that I refer back to this book daily now to implement health span increasing activities.

The book is broken into three sections:

Section 1. The Immortality Promise
Section 2. The Immortality Edge Longevity Program
Section 3. The Immortality Edge Forever

The seven chapters include:

1. The Aging Cure
2. The Immortality Edge Supplement Plan
3. The Immortality Edge Fitness Plan
4. The Immortality Edge Stress Reduction Plan
5. Add Years To Your Life
6. The Immortality Edge Forever Nutrition Plan
7. The Immortality Edge Forever Fitness Plan

I believe anyone who is really interested in the application of Nobel winning science to legitimately offer realistic and immediate ways to extend your life vitally, healthfully, and predictably will find this book their daily guidebook. The only real criticism I have of the book is that as of this review it wasn't available on Kindle.
