Book Description

One of the most influential and well-loved books of Christianity, The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis appears here in Penguin Classics in a new translation by Robert Jeffery, with an introduction by Max Von Habsburg, notes, a chronology and further reading.

The Imitation of Christ is a passionate celebration of God's love, mercy and holiness, which has stimulated religious devotion for over five hundred years. With great personal conviction and deep humanity, Thomas à Kempis (1380-1471) demonstrates the individual's reliance on God and on the words of Christ, and the futility of a life without faith, as well as exploring the ideas such as humility, compassion, patience and tolerance. Thomas spent some seventy years of his life in the reclusive environment of monasteries, yet in this astonishing work he demonstrates an encompassing understanding of human nature, while his writing speaks to readers of every age and every nation.

Thomas à Kempis was born at Kempen near Dusseldorf in 1380. He received the priesthood in 1413. Thomas wrote many other devotional works besides The Imitation of Christ, his masterpiece, as well as biographies of Gerald Groote and Florentius Radewyn. He died in 1471.

The Very Revd Robert Jeffery was born in 1935 and ordained in 1959. He has written on matters of Church history, spirituality, mission and ecumenism. In 1978, he became Archdeacon of Salop, and was Dean of Worcester from 1987-96 and subsequently Canon and Sub-Dean of Christ Church, Oxford. He retired in 2002 and is an Hon Doctor of Divinity of Birmingham University.

Max von Habsburg is the author of Catholic and Protestant Translations of the Imitatio Christi 1425-1650 (2011).

If a man tells you that he is fond of the Imitation, view him with sudden suspicion; he is either a dabbler or a saint...Heaven help us if we find easy reading in the Imitation of Christ (Ronald Knox)

None, I believe, except the Bible, has been so universally read and loved by Christians of all tongues and sects (Thomas Carlyle)

The most influential devotional book in Western Christian history (Professor John van Engen)

Thomas à Kempis was born at Kempen near Dusseldorf in 1380. At thirteen he left the local grammar school to join his elder brother John, who had attached himself to the Congregation of the Common Life. In 1399 Thomas' mentor Florentius allowed him to travel to Zwolle to seek admission to the new monastery at Mount St Agnes. He was professed in 1406 and received the priesthood in 1413. Thomas wrote many other devotional works besides The Imitation of Christ, his masterpiece, as well as biographies of Gerald Groote and Florentius Radewyn. He died in 1471.

5.0 out of 5 stars A manifesto for living 8 May 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As with most literature, I stumbled upon the imitation of Christ; which was surprising as some people put it second only to the Holy bible and I can understand why after reading this superb book.

Thomas A Kempis (1380 - 1471) spent 70 years a recluse in Monasteries and yet his passionate words of wisdom are just as valid today as they were then. This book has been renewing and reviving the faith in God for over 500 years now and it is a powerful work.

This book is filled with homespun wisdom, remove God and Jesus and we have a great work of philosophy, so please, if you are not religious, do not allow this work to stop your reading.

It has a cure for anxiety, turn away from consumerism. Overcome fear of death, name calling, pride, intellectualism. This book advocates turning away from material things, work hard, study hard, but care not about the opinions of others or looking clever.

Devote yourself to the spiritual, grow spiritually by reading and learning, work hard at modest and humble work and be judged by your actions, not your bank balance. An excellent read for our current difficult times.

This book has been the source of spiritual strength and devotion second only to the Bible for many Christians, Written in the early 15th Century it was translated into many different languages in those early years I think it has never been out of print and has always been read by many Christians of all generations and backgrounds. I beleive that it was in the hands of the Pope who died suddenly soon after election in the 1970s It is a book to be read many times - always something new and relevant to be found..
It is still after all these years a best seller wherever there are Christians trying to follow Christ

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 27 Mar. 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It could have been written in the 21st century. It quite clearly indicates that mankind hasn't changed one jot. We still make the same mistakes and see others in the same judgemental ways. That is why it is so interesting to read. The thoughts are just as helpful a guide today as they must have been when first written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging 14 July 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a book I've dipped into many times. Its spirituality fascinates me. It predates the Reformation but has quite an 'evangelical' simplicity and biblicism about it. I especially love the dialogues between Christ and disciple. This is an excellent translation; very clear and powerful. Reading this in the morning really does arm you wisely for the remainder of the day. The Imitation is perhaps one of the most challenging devotional texts of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine edition of a timeless classic 12 May 2015
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent edition of the classic text commonly attributed to the fifteenth-century mystic Thomas a Kempis. In spite of its age, the writing is remarkably fresh, powerful and illuminating, providing wisdom which transcends time and appeals today in an age of chaos and distractions.

Second only to the Bible in popularity as a guide for Christian devotion, the Imitation was written as part of an attempt to rediscover genuine piety and spiritual fulfilment in the late medieval Catholic church. The Imitation was actually written as four books, focusing on withdrawal from worldly obsessions, development of interior spiritual peace, a dialogue on the eucharist and a dialogue on spiritual practice. Like many I found these latter dialogues, presented as a conversation between Christ and a disciple, as the most direct and powerful in their message to the reader.

This edition by Penguin benefits from a helpful introduction explaining the context, authorship and key themes in the Imitation, as well as a useful guide on further reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Roman Catholic classic 6 Nov. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Advice based on Roman Catholic assumptions that are too easy to criticize in this secular age and the recommendations seem quaint and out of place in the way we live our lives today. But slow reading here and there of this beautiful clear prose starts to leave an uneasy feeling that we have got it all wrong! Worth bearing in mind that this is a world classic and still widely read.
