Product Description

Unlock the lost and hidden meanings of the world’s ancient and modern signs and symbols. The most comprehensive reference book on symbolic objects that you’ll ever find.

This is the largest, most visually stunning, definitive guide to the secret and ancient knowledge of signs and symbols, some of which has been lost over thousands of years.

• Why is the eye believed to be a powerful symbol of protection by fisherman?

• Why do Masonic Temples have a black and white chequered floor covering?

• Why do Hindus use coloured rice powder to draw elaborate symbols in front of their homes, only to have these patterns destroyed every day by footprints?

• What are the hidden meanings behind the symbols on the American dollar?

• What is the most important symbol in the World?

Divided into easy-to-follow A-Z themed sections, the book answers all those questions and more, from sections on Magic and Mystery, Deities and Rituals, the Animal and Plant Kingdom, Landscape and the Elements, to Food and Sacred Geometry.

Find out about the secret Demonic alphabet and Script of the Magi, the Glastonbury Zodiac, the Masonic Compass, the Eye of Horus, Native American hunting symbols, the Caduceus and the Indian Diwali ritual.

The Illustrated Signs & Symbols Sourcebook is a fascinating compendium of the hidden meanings hidden behind the most important visual symbols in the world.

About the Author

Adele Nozedar has long been fascinated by the power of symbols and visual signs, which led her to the formal study of alchemy. Her interest in psychology and how the unconscious mind works led her to the study of ancient myths, art, film and the esoteric in all forms. (She was also born into a long line of psychics.) Adele’s other passion is music – she is founder and owner of a music studio in the Brecon Beacons, Twin Peaks, and formerly was one of the few women in the music industry to run a record label.

WELL DONE ADELE 16 Dec 2011
By Neo
Format:Paperback
I cannot praise Adele Nozedar enough. Having read and treasured her beautiful book 'The Secret Language of Birds', I now have her stunningly illustrated semiotic bible - The Signs and Symbols Sourcebook.

As an author and poet on Amazon myself, I find her books a great inspiration. A couple of cups of strong black coffee and a read of the Sourcebook and ideas for poems and short stories come tumbling out: buy this book and look at pages 434 to 436 for an excellent exposition textually and graphically of the Rune alphabet and its many meanings - the Runes each have a tree and a god to look after them.

Surrounding these pages are around 550 others, rich in meaning and interest. The introduction itself is worth its weight in gold for the sheer intellectual pleasure the words bring.

Adele lives above the UK's notoriously interesting Hay-on-Wye where I have spent many happy hours either walking in the Black Mountains or searching for - and finding - obscure books on 'King Arthur' and the Holy Grail.

Adele writes with empathy - she understands her subjects. She knows readers will want a wide variety of concepts and she supplies the most esoteric collection of them: read this book to find the 'Raelian Star', or the 'Horns of Odin', the symbolism of 'buckwheat', 'the black skin of Kali' or 'Sedna' the Inuit sea-goddess. You can find out who the 'Domovoi' are, the colour of Tezcatlipoca's cloak, the magical properties of the 'Balche' and what to do after you have held fine rice powder between finger and thumb.

Producing an encyclopedia this size must be hard. Adele has shown a love of her subject but also great dedication in ensuring the book is comprehensive. Well done to her editorial team too. Sourcing the thousands of illustrations must have been a nightmare - but it is the visions conjured by these as well as the words that make this a book to buy - for a superb Christmas present - or for a great gift between friends.

So thank you Adele and keep up the outstanding work you are doing!

Outstanding 15 May 2012
Format:Paperback
I won't make the review too detailed as there is a good one already, I meant to review this when I bought it but forgot... there is all the more reason to buy it now with the price-drop. This is more than a sourcebook - even though it is the best sourcebook available at the moment - but was a great book to accompany the student of ancient and modern esoteric symbolism but also gives more profound lessons in what symbols actually are. What is a symbol? How does it make you feel? What do you learn from it?

A Truly Comprehensive Work 5 Sep 2011
By A. Anaya - Published on Amazon.com
I stumbled on this book in a pile of clearance books, and bought it on a whim. I never imagined it would become my favorite resource! I have been heavily studying occult symbolism, esoteric mysticism, etc, and this is an invaluable treasure trove of information and symbology from many different disciplines. It features dedicated sections to entire families of symbols, including a section on the Tarot, and a section on Freemason symbology. With detailed information about the Hebrew alphabet, the Rosicrucian alphabet, and stuff as obscure as Icelandic Stave Symbols...I mean c'mon. This book has a lot. And you don't have to be a scholar of obscure occult stuff to find something interesting, either. Awesome Awesome Awesome!
Excellent Collection of Knowledge 11 May 2012
By Arcturus70 - Published on Amazon.com
The Illustrated Signs & Symbols Sourcebook: An A to Z Compendium should be in every serious library as a reference in my opinion. This book contains detail descriptions and images of important concepts within the Humanities and human experience...from ancient to modern. Another reviewer highlighted the major sections of the book, so I won't repeat them here, but I will say I agree with that review as to the depth and breadth of content. To help others see what type of book this is, I loaded some images in Amazon. From these three picts, shoppers can get an idea of the information layout, fonts, and graphics. I always find that helpful to "see inside."

This diverse reference book makes a wonderful companion piece to world mythology courses and history studies. The content represents peoples and cultures of all continents. The Introduction is most helpful in explaining the importance and far-reaching influence of signs and symbols. For me, it helps me brainstorm lessons and activities for my myth and cultural studies classes. / Avid readers of sci-fi and fantasy may find this book interesting... particularly readers of Harry Potter who might want to delve deeper into topics Ms. Rowling weaves into her stories.

Here are some of the intriguing topics found within the book: the Beckoning Cat; Celtic Cross & Knotwork; Colors and Meaning; Freemasonry; Kabbalah; Tarot; Wheel; Zodiac; Elements; Universe & Milky Way; Sacred and mythic Animals and plants; Green Man; Hogan; Medicine Wheel; Pagoda; various ancient alphabets;various festivals and celebrations. These are just the tip of the iceberg.

This book is listed as a paperback. The cover is actually much more study than your average paperback book. Seems to hold up well under repeated use. There may be better products out there in this genre, but for the money and the size, there's a lot of amazing stuff!
