Product Description

Review

This excellent abridgement achieves the rare distinction of rendering the whole work more accessible. The sharpened narrative arc increases the emotional intensity of this most ancient and exciting of war stories, yet all the most moving speeches remain. Atmospheric details abound. Narrator Anton Lesser inhabits the characters--men and gods--speaking their words with fluidity...Characters are mentioned in qucik succession; one almost envisions the Achaeans and Trojans trotting from their locker rooms onto the field as their names and positions are announced. Once introduced, however, the warriors battle to their honorable ends, and the listener is gripped by the story's unrelenting pace. Orchestral selections herald each segment, highlighting the gravity and profundity of the poem's themes. --AudioFile 2008

Homer is difficult to read, but not to listen to in bed. If you are interested in modern literature, which stems from ancient Greek aural poetry tradition, buy audio books and listen to the Aeniad, the Illiad, also difficult writers like James Joyce's Ulysses and poetry such as 'Under The Milk Wood.' Poetical works should be listened to and not read - buy them for your children to hear in bed!

Abridged 14 Feb. 2014
By Karen E. Durham - Published on Amazon.com
Anton Lesser does a wonderful job with reading of this work. The down side is it ends with the death of Hector. Abridged in this case evidently means ends half way through the story. So I loved what I heard, I'd just like to hear the rest of it!
