Biography

The story of Biffy Clyro is as romantic as it is archetypal. Three childhood friends from Ayrshire formed a band, delivered three albums of abrasive youthful exuberance and finally cracked the big time when their fourth – 2007’s Puzzle – hit the charts at #2. By the time the promotion of their fifth album Only Revolutions had ceased, they were bona fide stars who could ... Read more in Amazon's Biffy Clyro Store

4.0 out of 5 stars biffy clyro - 4 April 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
3 new tracks from biffy clyro, the insane scottish rockers. Starts off with 'the ideal height', which is going to be on their next album 'the vertigo of bliss' It is has a bit more complexity to it than some of the songs on their debut album 'blackened sky'. The begining is light and has a cool stop start rythym, and at 1:30 the distortion kicks in, bringing the power biffy pull off so well, then comes a small break with a really melodic guitar bit from simon neil. Next its back to some distortion and a bit of harmonising and cool simultaneous vocals. The second track is definatly (in my opinion) the stand out track of this single, '...and with the scissorkick is victorious' The intro is totally misleading, then comes the impact, its got a great rythym to it, great changes from fast to slow heavy and melodic, with some really chunky guitaring, also, some brilliant shouting from biffy which really adds to the power and passion they put across. Then straight into another beautifully melodic bit. The contrast between the clean guitar and distortion is always done well. The vocals always surprise me with biffy too, all 3 members get to use their vocal chords, with simon on lead vocals, but both ben(drums) and james(bass) share his talent. This is going on to be one of my favourite biffy clyro songs. Last but not least is 'do you remember what you came for'. Good to hear the final version of this song only hearing the demo, great sound, played by simon on his own, subliminal lyrics written by simon, who is a superb songwriter. All in all, a great single, and the songs are just as good played live. Check out this amazingly talented but very modest band, and great guys too! If you get the chance to see them live, do not turn it down! Easily the most exciting band ive ever seen live...... Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars They can still rock it! Oh yes! 25 May 2003

Format:Audio CD
After a well deserved time break from their debut album "Blackened Sky", Biffy Clyro surface once again in the rock scene with this "The Ideal Height".
After listening to the "The Ideal Height" song, one can't help but feel there's something missing. It's a nice rock song, but it just lacks the "biffy power" of previously released singles, such as 57 and Justboy. So let's look at those 2 lovely b-sides...
The last of the 3 songs that this CD-Single contains, "Do You Remember What You Came For?" is just a simple song, one that doesn't mean to be pretentious or capture the listner attention immedietly. It's no "Breatheher", and although it may remind some of us of it, it sure doesn't try to be it. It's a calm and kind of sad song, acoustic in style, that grabs you slowly from the inside time after time you listen to it.
Of course I've saved the very best for last. "...And With The Scissorkick Is Victorious" is THE best song in this CD-Single and, quite frankly, one of Biffy Clyro's best b-sides to date. It's full of bone crunching guitar riffs and drums' mayhem as well as the "sweet" not-so-aggressive melodic vocals the band has made us used to. A true rock gem that Biffy Clyro fans will sure treasure for a long time!
One final note on the cover artwork: it seems the boys have gotten their testosterone levels a bit high this time around... Just check the covers of this single, the next one (Questions & Answers) and the album. It's not only great to listen to, but also lovely to look at ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ideal Height 14 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
“The Ideal Height” is one of those songs that comes along every once in a while which kinda makes you stop and actually *think* about it for a second. From the initial stop-start rhythms and angular chords to the quieter and more brooding middle section, moving onto the more urgent ending, it’s quite a journey, and you barely feel the three and a half minutes pass by, a great opening single from an album.

And that’s just when it gets interesting. “…And With The Scissorkick Is Victorious” is like Biffy have taken “57”, “27” and “Stress On the Sky”, put them in a blender, added more balls and stirred well. And then some. The song twists and turns like an electric eel on speed, and would never fail to be a crowd-pleaser in a live situation, with some great anthemic moments. Final song “Do You Remember What You Came For?” is a soothing ballad, mixing heart-breaking vocals and some luscious guitar lines to great effect. The final vocal harmony of the song caps off a great CD, and leaves you wondering that if these songs are only b-sides, then the tracks on Biffy Clyro’s next album must be absolutely mind-blowing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Biffy Clyro, need i say more? 10 Mar 2004
Format:Vinyl
The fifth single from the amazing, never-cease-to-amaze Scottish trio. And how typical it is, quirky time signature. Incredibly original, as can be expected. Beautiful guitar lines, poetic/prophetic lyrics from Si, original bass from James and original and perfectly fitting drums from Ben. For a song thats lasts 3minutes 21, it takes you through a whirlwind of moods. The intro interesting and attention catching, the verses beautifully sculpted and the heavy choruses, an excuse to let your hair down. ...And with the scissorkick is a mixture of all good things Biffy. Amazing instrumental work, beautiful lyrics and vocals. Ranging from screaming at the beginning, to gentle falsetto later on. For those present at gigs, one can hear the chants of 'scissorkick' in the hopes they'll play this song, although the crowd are rarely rewarded. Lastly DYRWYCF, seen as a somewhat juxtaposition after scissorkick, but a mellow, moving, emotive acoustic song. This single and b-sides really show the diversity of Biffy's abilities. and remember Mon the Biffy.
