Book Description

28 Nov 2011
The crew of the Icarus is used to high-stress situations: their ship is designed to dive into the heart of a star to collect scientific data for research. But when they discover an alien artifact hovering in low orbit of the Sun, the attempt to retrieve it pushes them to the breaking point. Captain Gordon Markov is more than happy to oversee his final mission on board Icarus. And Doctor Stephen Straub is more than happy to be a part of the prestigious research team assigned to the ship. Testing out the Icarus's new heatshielding is the plan, but the artifact in orbit of the Sun leads Doctor Catherine Tybalt, head of the research team, to press the captain to retrieve the object for further analysis. The interior of the artifact is hollow -- a void -- and should be incinerated, but it's perfectly intact. If they can discover what makes the object naturally resilient to the radiation of the Sun, perhaps it can be used for future development in stardiving. With a risky plan in place, Captain Markov reluctantly agrees. However, the artifact emits a strange radiation that affects not just the operational systems of the ship, but also the crew itself. Once the artifact is on board, research begins, and the scientists discover the terrifying secret of the void...but when they do, the fate of the ship may have already been sealed. The Icarus Void is an intense novel of science-fiction horror that will drag you in and pull you along until the final page.

About the Author

CK Burch is a novelist, poet, father of two, and assistant editor for ZED Presents...Publishing. Born in 1982 and floating somewhere between adulthood and immaturity, he writes horror fiction and love letters, balancing out a strange line that, perhaps, only a Libra or a child of the 80's could appreciate. When not writing or composing, he's spending time with his little rugrats, who also walk a fine line between adorable and deportable. They take after their father. When he's not trying desperately to write in a few more chapters and ignore those lovable children who serve to remind him not to cuss so much, he's playing video games with the volume up real loud. It drowns out the sound of neighbors yelling at him to turn it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sci Fi Thriller 13 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I originally got this when it was free. Interesting premise and nothing to lose, I wasn't expecting too much. After the first page I couldn't stop reading. Excellent story, believable characters with good development, well researched science and a good paced plot leading to an exciting climax.
This book ticked all the boxes for me.
My only complaint would be that it ended.

If you like well thought out sci fi get this book.
I doubt you'll be disappointed.

What can I say? This book is amazing and I will definitely be looking for more from this author. Not giving anything away but it takes all the best bits from your favourite sci-fi movies, such as Aliens, Event Horizon and Sphere, and gives them a whole new interpretation and a great new twist! Now all we need is a sequel telling us what happened to The Prometheus! Bloomin' awesome, awesome, awesome......quick, give me more! The best sci-fi novel I have read so far this year by a mile!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read 28 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm surprised there aren't more reviews for this book. I enjoyed it very much. If you like Event Horizon, The Abyss, Aliens and movies/stories of that ilk you will like this.
I found the plot was fantastic and the story really kept my attention - I couldn't put it down. The only thing I would critise is the over-use of a certain profanity - I think the book would have been just as good without it!
I will certainly look out for more from the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good 'hard' SF read 19 Jan 2013
By Mondoro TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A well-paced and plotted story with plenty of excitement and some credible science detail, enlivened by the delusions that overcome the main characters as they explore the mysterious artefact that they have retrieved in the neighbourhood of the Sun. Burch shows skill in developing his main characters, probing into their past, and telling a story that has advanced well beyond the old 'stars and spaceships' genre of traditional SF. Full of surprises throughout, and ends with a brilliant conclusion. Yes, rather too many four letter words, but no worse than many of us would come up with were we caught up in such bizarre events!

I found only two minor typos in my kindle copy.

1.0 out of 5 stars The f word, too many times 12 Aug 2012
By Martin
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really thought that who ever made this availabe for the Kindle was a disgruntled employee, putting in the 'f' word in randomly, for it simply did not add anything to the context of the particular sentance. It would now seem that it was the authers intention. Why?
Don't want to continue the book. Good job it was 77p and not more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality writing 4 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having started to read this book I was expecting a reasably good story. But alas this is a possible good story ruined by the stupid continuous 'F' word. All this silly swearing makes me think the writer has a serious problem. It would have been nice to see what the outcome was by the end of the story but I cast it to the garbage can after a very short time of reading. I shall steer well clear of this author in future.
