I found this book rather confusing and pretty useless. I also believe that some phonetic trancriptions are incorrect. For the word 'say', for instance, the transcription given is /se/, whereas it should be /seI/; likewise, the word 'about' is transcribed as /@bawt/, whereas it should be /@baUt/

You can learn basic IPA in an easy and fun way with this book!! 18 Oct. 2012

As a language student I must say this was a good purchase, I practise the languages (I'm studying more than 10 at the same time) everyday and once you know the symbols and the sounds they represent YOU REALLY IMPROVE any language amazingly. My native language is Spanish but I master English so it was no problem to read this book, it starts with the vowels classifying them according to their height (open, mid and close) and their backness (front, central and back) then it moves to the consonants listing them by their three basic features: PLACE OF ARTICULATION, MANNER OF ARTICULATION AND VOICING, it ends with other things like utterances, stress, allophones etc. it gives you many chances to practise how to transcribe words (not only in English but also in other languages like Japanese, German and French) using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA); the practice worksheets at the end of the book are another feature that I liked, they are very useful for keeping the less common symbols of the IPA in your memory by writing with a pencil everyday. Although this book teaches you IPA (basically) IS NOT a course about phonetics, if you are seriously into phonetics I'd recommend "Principles of Phonetics" by John Laver and "A Practical Introducton to Phonetics" by J. C. Catford which has many experiments you can try by your own vocal tract...if you are a completelly beginner in phonetics (and principally IPA) THIS IS the book for you TRUST ME!!
