From the very first chords of the first song, the wonderfully rich, hooky Innercity Garden, it's clear that the pop in evidence here is anything but throwaway - underneath the tunes and the layers of guitar lies something pretty damn substantial. Having listened maybe 10 times to this album, it's still at the stage where it gets better every time.

The first part of the album seems to be working up to the title track, though even if this is my personal favourite, the album doesn't diminish in its warmth and intensity thereafter. On top of the instant appeal of the songs themselves, there's a real attention to detail in the production: this is a great-sounding album - the guitars layered meticulously and interestingly, constantly trying to grab your attention from the lovely warmth of John Andrew Frederick's baritone, and his lyrics which are in turn funny without losing impact, and raw and emotional without ever being mawkish.

Overall, I'd say this is my favourite new album this year. Not only that but I think it's the best TBW album so far - familiarity with this band's previous work couldn't in any way prepare me for just how great it is. The fact it's been released in this country on the wonderfully obscure indie label Pink Hedgehog (psychedelic connoisseurs, taking a look at their rota) makes this a band that really should not be overlooked. A classic in the making.

This CD is such a combination of everything I love about music
that I'm not sure where to begin. The vocals are warm and yet
has en edge of vulnerability. The songs are melodic and yearning.
She must have been very special, lucky girl. And the song "Dylan"
is wonderful - makes me want to go back and listen to my Dylan
collection, which is a good thing. I can listen to this The Hypnotizing Sea (and I have) many, many, many times.

Truly Hypnotic! 6 April 2006
By Tasmin
Format:Audio CD
I Purchased this LP after watching an incendiary acoustic performance by John and Scott of TBW in London back in December. Since then it has barely left my stereo!
....Swirling angular guitars in the MBV mould along with hook laden melodies that you just can't shake and great lyrics make this is an underated modern classic.
One of the album's of the year I say!
