Is it possible to read The Hydrogen Sonata as a stand alone book or is it necessary to have read the previous books in the Culture series?

You can read the Hydrogen Sonata as a stand alone. If you have the choice to start anywhere with this authors books. I suggest to start with The Payer of Games, Consider Phlebas or The Algebraist (not a Culture novel, as such). All Culture novels can be read as stand alone, no real sequence to consider.
Hope this helps
