Book Description

11 Mar 2011 1854379569 978-1854379566
"The Hunting of the Snark" relates in glittering verse the story of how the Bellman and his eccentric crew, who include a butcher, a baker, a beaver and a tailor, set off in quest of that most mysterious and elusive of creatures, the Snark. In 1959 Tove Jansson, the creator of Moomin Valley and its magical inhabitants, was commissioned to illustrate a Swedish edition of Lewis Carroll's miniature masterpiece. It proved an inspired choice, as the enigmatic charms of Jansson's illustrative style bring to life the beauty and strangeness of Carroll's tale. The minds of two of the greatest children's authors of the past 150 years meet on the page. Remarkably, amid the success of Tove Jannson's Moomin books, her unique edition of "The Hunting of the Snark" was forgotten, and has been unavailable for over fifty years. Now, for the first time, these beautiful illustrations are matched with Lewis Carroll's original English text, so that readers can encounter this wonderful adventure afresh through the eyes of one of Europe's finest illustrators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jansonn genius! 10 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
At last Tove Jansson is being recognised as more than a writer of cute children's stories. It is wonderful to see this book reprinted, but to be honest I don't think it will have much appeal to you unless you are a keen Jansson fan - although there are a lot of us about. The story itself is pleasant enough, but it it is for the illustrations that most people will but this book. Jansson's work is wonderful, simple black and white woodcut-like drawings, and you can identify plenty of Moomin-style figures. Unfortunately, this is not a long book and the drawings are small, so you end up wishing that Jansson had done far more than she had room for.

I'm here, not because of the odd poem 'The Hunting of the Snark' but because of Tove 'Moomin' Jansson's wonderful illustrations.

Jansson's illustrations were first published back in 1959. They are simple pen and ink drawings and successfully capture the odd essence of Carroll's poem. This curio is a must have for any Jansson or Moomin fan.

Some years later, Jansson was commissioned again to illustrate a Swedish translation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, first published in 1966.

5 stars for Tove!!! (I'd give 2 stars for Lewis, sorry, but I'm not here for him!)

Oh, it's good the reviews for the Jansson illustrated edition of 'The Hunting of the Snark' are separated according to illustration, especially when it is abundantly clear. Unfortunately, reviews for 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' are not!

5.0 out of 5 stars "I said it in Hebrew - I said it in Dutch - I said it in German and Greek:" 27 Feb 2013
By bernie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a great nonsensical tale that probably will need an annotated version to make sense. Not of the purpose as that is in the title. But of the few words that are real but archaic. In any sense this is a fun read. I want to believe it holds some profound secret other than just a play on words.

"They sought it with Thimbles, they sot it with care;

They threatened its life with forks and hope;

They threatened its life with a railway-share;

They charmed it with smiles and soap."

You will want to re-read "The Hunting of the Snark an Agony, in Eight Fits" (1876) and see with other allegorical nonsense you missed.
