4.0 out of 5 stars High Flying Drama 17 May 2009

Robert Mitchum and Robert Wagner are fine as fighter pilots with clashing personalities in this Korean war melodrama distinguished by incredible aerial photography. If you have any interest in aircraft or flying definitely worth a look.

This is a quite nice little war movie about a group of American fighter pilots during Korean War, adapted from a novel, "The Hunters" by James Salter. I admit that I didn't read the book, but it has very good reviews - and most people seem to consider that it is much better than this film.

The story begins when somewhere in 1952 a renowned fighter pilot, World War II ace and instructor (we know he spend years as member of US military mission to Greece, training local pilots), major Cleve Saville (Robert Mitchum), is affected to a squadron of F-86 Sabres in Korea. He is part of a wave of reinforcements destined to "harden" fighter units, after the Chinese send to the front improved versions of MiG-15, manned by pilots who recently underwent an intensive upgrading training in Soviet Union (in the real Korean War most of elite communist fighters pilots were in fact Soviet, not Chinese). Major Saville will command a flight of four F-86. His three subalterns are: Lieutenant Corona (John Gabriel), an almost supernaturally calm young pilot; Lieutenant Abbott (Lee Philips), a courageous man but with quite serious issues; and finally Lieutenant Pell (Robert Wagner), an amazingly skilled and brave pilot, but also an absolute "pain in the neck" in every other aspect, who would not recognize the word "discipline" even if he stepped in it...

The day of his arrival in Japan, just before being shipped to Korea, major Saville meets a somehow mysterious young Norwegian woman and becomes instantly fascinated by her - and the attraction is mutual, at least to some extent. And then, just before things go too far, he learns, that this young woman is actually the wife of his wingman, Lt. Abbott...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Star is the North american F-86 Sabre 4 Oct 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I first saw this when it came out in 1958. It was brilliant in vivid colour and the sounds are fantastic. The story centres around fighter action in the Korean War. There is a deep love interest when Mitchum has an affair with the wife of one of his pilots. The flying scenes are spectacular. There is one crash scene where the F-86 is in fact one of an early batch. there is also a Chines pilot called, "Casey Jones" - yes Casey Jones. He falls to the guns of Robert Mitchume (Major Cleve Seville)
It is very anti communist but that was the sign of the times. It was directed and produced by Dick Powell and first shown at the USAF Academy. I would highly recommend this film from Amazon

3.0 out of 5 stars Love tryst and thundering planes. 12 Feb 2012
By Spike Owen TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Set during the Korean War, this picture features the fine talent of Robert Mitchum as Major Cleve Saville and a young fresh faced Robert Wagner as the cocksure Lt Ed Pell. As the war rages, and the airmen deal with the pressures that come with the service, Saville starts to fall in love with the wife {a very weak May Britt} of one of his men, thus adding further pressures to a company growing weary by the day. The Hunters, based on the novel written by James Salter, is a very solid picture, perhaps bogged down by it's determination to give the picture emotional heart, it never the less thrills with its aerial sequences and is awash with glorious colour that new televisual technology can enhance, it's also a film that definitely needs to be seen in widescreen.

By not outstaying its welcome, The Hunters is the perfect film for genre fans who find themselves stuck in the house on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Tho Mitchum of course oozes his usual screen presence here, he is playing second fiddle to the F-86 Sabres that are swishing about the bright blue sky, dog fighting with the Migs {well F-84 Thunders cunningly disguised as Migs} and thus giving the picture the necessary action quotient. Films set in the Korean War are few and far between, so to at least have a film like The Hunters to view when in the mood is surely a really good thing. 6/10

4.0 out of 5 stars a better film than the book would have made 28 Mar 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I saw the film a few years back and recently read the book by James Salter. The book is one for its time... written by a Korean fighter pilot who told a straight story based doubtless on his experiences of war and what motivates the obsession of being an 'ace'. This wouldn't have translated well into a film as it had basically only the one theme...albeit a powerful one and excellent for a book... so although The Hunters film deviates significantly it does make a pretty decent story and watching it again was very rewarding.. . even if the MIGs had, for obvious reasons,to be substituted by F84 Thunderstreaks... (but great to see them in formations too). Well worth the watch and Robert Mitchum, as usual, excels in this sort of role.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Hunters 30 Jun 2014
By JoRo
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
To be perfectly honest the best bits in this film are the shots of the F86 Sabres. The aerial photography is stunning and what you see are real aircraft - no CGI. The special effects are pretty average for the Fifties. My suspension of disbelief (which one must have to really enjoy a work of fiction) was severely tested when the hero deliberatley carries out a wheels up landing in enemy territory and gets away with it. I don't think an old pilot or a bold pilot would have considered it. Otherwise it's not bad. The romantic angle is there to keep the women happy.
