4.0 out of 5 stars An imaginative YA vampiric dystopia 31 Dec 2012
By I Read, Therefore I Blog TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
In an alternate world where vampires have taken over the world, humans (or hepers) have been hunted virtually to extinction. Those known to exist live at the Heper Institute, where they are studied ... and also hunted. For every 10 years, the Ruler announces a Heper Hunt, where only a handful of vampires selected by random lottery are permitted to hunt a group of hepers and eat them.

When 17-year-old Gene's numbers come up, he's not as thrilled as he should be because he's a heper who's been passing himself off as a vampire ever since he was a child. Forced into a closed environment with a group of predatory vampires - including a classmate, Ashley June who he's had a crush on since starting high school - he knows that if his competitors discover the truth then they will rip him apart, just like they will the hepers who live in a sealed off glass dome - hepers who see Gene as part of the hunt ...

Andrew Fukuda's YA novel (the first in a trilogy) portrays vampires as dangerous predators rather than emo romance fodder. The world building is fascinating and although it didn't all work for me, it's nevertheless a fascinating spin on the dystopian genre and for that alone, it deserves to have an audience.

Hidden by his father as a child from the vampires who've taken over the world, Gene's spent most of his life trying to pass himself off as one of them. Fukuda has really thought about his vampiric society - they have their own mannerisms (including scratching their wrists instead of laughing, lack of facial hair and they sleep hanging from the ceiling) and their own society with hierarchy and roles - and how Gene gets around this. It didn't always convince me (particularly when they get to the desert and Gene can't wash away his body odour) and some of the mannerisms, notably the armpit sex, was a little too out there for me to believe. Although terrified, Gene's resourceful and I was rooting for him.

By contrast the other characters feel underdeveloped, particularly the hepers who'll be hunted who don't get much page time and Ashley June who is little more than Gene's crush. However, I'm expecting this to change in the sequel (which has been set up with an incredible cliff hanger) and I'll definitely be checking it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hunt 22 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
'The Hunt' is a truly terrifying and electrifying read from debut author Andrew Fukuda. Having heard a lot about this book prior to publication I had a feeling that I was going to love it and love it I did. Scary, sinister and incredibly exciting, this is a story which will appeal strongly to both a male and female teen audience. There's something for everyone, danger and scares, a touch of romance and a plot which will have you gripped.

Seventeen year old Gene lives in a future world where humans are practically extinct. Near the start of the story he is selected to take part in a government sponsored hunt. But this is a hunt with a difference because the prey consists of a group of humans (or hepers as they are known). For most, this would be an honour but Gene isn't just anyone. He's hiding a big secret which if exposed during the hunt could end up costing him his life.

Although Fukuda never mentions the word vampire in the book, you can only put all the clues together - can't go out in the sun, sleep upside down, long nails and fangs, and come up with one outcome. The fact that the population are never named but their unusual characteristics and traits are discussed in detail, actually made them seem even more sinister, if that's possible.

What I found even more scary about the story was the constant struggle for survival that many of the characters face. You never know when someone is going to meet a particularly nasty end and the tension in the book is palpable. No one is safe and I got the feeling that Fukuda would not be afraid to kill off one of the main characters if it benefited the story. That meant that I was constantly worried about my favourites surviving until the end of the book.

A jaw dropping revelation on the final page had me extremely anxious for more - so please Andrew Fukudua, don't keep us in suspense for too long!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deadly vampires are back... 16 April 2012
Format:Paperback
The Hunt was an action-packed ride that was both creepy and nerve wracking.

17 year old Gene lives in a world where humans, or hepers, are near extinct. They have been eaten, devoured, by the more dominant species. And to blend in and hide his true nature, Gene must disguise every clue that if discovered, would mean certain death. For Gene walks among them, pretending to be one of them. He salivates at the sight of a heper on TV. He doesn't smile. He doesn't blush. He scratches his wrist instead of expressing amusement or excitement.

But then he is chosen to be a contender in the Hunt. Every decade there is a government sponsored hunt for hepers. They are released from the dome in Savannah where they are studied and the hunters give chase. Gene must figure out every possible escape. There is no way he can be a part of the hunt, he would be discovered...and then hunted himself.

I sat on the edge of my seat as I read this book. It was fever pitched and all out terrifying at points. The Hunt was brilliantly written, placing the reader in the middle of the action along side Gene, terrified to sweat or give away a clue about our own nature.

Readers will devour this book, be greedy for more and scared to put it down. This is one for all the people who said vampire novels were over done and unoriginal. That may have been true, but now there is The Hunt.
