Review

'A fascinating look back at where we have come from...lots of photographs, reconstructions and maps, coupled with clear, easy-to-follow language, help make a complex subject very readable.' --Manchester Evening News

'This masterful, short synthesis of a comprehensive and thorny subject is a must for anyone interested in human evolution.' --Minerva: The International Review of Ancient Art and Archaeology

'It's not easy to pack six or seven million years of human evolution into 111 pages, but Charles Lockwood has succeeded brilliantly.' --London Archaeologist

Product Description

The Human Story is a guide to man's ancestors, from the earliest hominids such as Sahelanthropus, dating back 6-7 million years, through to our own species, Homo sapiens. Over the past twenty years there has been an explosion of species' names in the story of human evolution, due both to new discoveries and to a growing understanding of the diversity that existed in the past. Drawing on this new information, as well as his own considerable expertise and practical experience, Charles Lockwood explains in clear, easy-to-follow language, what each of the key species represents and how it contributes to our knowledge of human evolution. He describes the main sites, the individual fossils, the people and stories involved in the key discoveries and the basic facts about each species - what it looked like, how and when it lived and what it ate as well as explaining how we know all this. There are drawings, photographs and maps and charts throughout to illustrate and enhance the text and help demystify the fascinating cast of characters who hold the secret to man's origins.

I bought this last year because I was looking for a readable primer on the subject of human evolution, and I certainly wasn't disappointed!

Combining both a good and readable text with many useful illustrations, this book can be enjoyed by just about anyone who would like to get a better grasp of the evidence of our own species' history. It's the sort of book that can be read and enjoyed by all, no scientific knowledge or education is needed to help you sail through the book as you'll learn more and more about our lineage since it split from the ancestors of Chimpanzees between 5 and 7 million years ago.

Good basic book, with good illustrations. Found it helpful for work with early school-leavers in their teens.

Not about evolution 1 Dec 2010
By Tugberk
Format:Paperback
I was a little disappointed with the book. I was expecting more advanced discussion about the forces of evolution in the history of mankind. It is more a description of various humanoids. The text is at the level of a junior high school student. Moreover, there is a tendency to reason the increased use of tools for the will of more meat. I dont think this is right. The reason to use tools would be the competition / fight between the humanoids. Even today the most advanced technology starts with the military research and then applied to daily life.
