The Human Body documentary is the sort of televisual undertaking that continues to justify the BBC licence fee. Presented by Robert Winston, it takes us on a journey from birth to death using time-lapse photography, computer graphics and various state-of-the-art imaging techniques to explore every aspect, every nook and crevice of the human body in its various stages of growth, maturity and eventual decay. Conception, toddlerhood, the awkward growing pains of adolescence, the incredibly complex workings of the brain (which burns up more energy than any other part of the human body, viewers of daytime TV included, apparently) and finally death are vividly depicted and explained. Winston's lucid, avuncular tones make The Human Body accessible to an intelligent 10-year-old and ages upward, though the more squeamish viewer might baulk at scenes of food being digested, or childbirth in all its inevitable messiness. Statistics abound--the average human will eat for three-and-a-half years during his or her lifetime, eat 160kg of chocolate and spend six months on the toilet. Though heart-warming in that it shows the commonality of human experience, The Human Body is also a potentially depressing reminder of our frail physicality and mortality. However, the most moving programme here features Herbie, a cancer victim who, in agreeing to have his last moments filmed as he lies dying in a hospice, has perhaps achieved a deserved immortality through this programme.

This BBC series shows the complexity and beauty of the human body and mind in an imaginative and innovative way that explains all the difficult concepts in an instant.Sir Robert Winston has put all of his faith and trust on this project,and he has done done his narrative part like any other BBC presenter has done it before,to perfection. This BBC documentary programe clearly illustrates the seven ages of man,and the structure that we inhabbit.The best part of the series is the second episode,which is on pregnancy and is arguably the best,it explains not only what is happening to the baby,but also the effects on the mother,this is a must see for any parents wanting to have a baby,or the ones who are awaiting a baby.

This BBC series shows the complexity and beauty of the human body and mind in an imaginative and innovative way that explains difficult concepts in an instant. Sir Robert Winston is also an engaging presenter, who manages to pass on his enthusiasm for the subject matter without effort. The first episode is somewhat general, but necessary to explain the approach. This is followed by an episode on pregnancy, which is arguably the best, and a must-see for any parents-to-be. It explains not only what is happening to the baby, but also the effects on the mother. The following episodes may also lay to rest the fears of many parents by showing what happens through childhood and puberty, and why such things as the 'terrible twos' and 'teenage tantrums' occur. Aging and death are also sympathetically treated, and the whole series acts as a wonderful learning aid for people of any age. Tools used include case studies, experiments (such as what happens to Sir Winston when he drinks alcohol) and uses forms of computer imagery never seen before this series.

A superb series which I watched with total interest on TV. When I became pregnant for the second time I just needed to watch it all over so bought the DVD set and haven't regretted it. There is something of interest for all ages from 3 - 100. My three year old found it fascinating watching the foetus growing inside the ladies tummy and this saved time on explanations from me! My husband just seemed to utter the sentence "It's amazing isn't it".
This is a learning experience for the whole family about the body, it's felings and most importantly how the brain works. You think you know most things and then you watch this!!!!
