Review

"An excellent introduction to the subject. pleasing illustrations of Huguenot craftmanship." -- TLS.

Product Description

Several hundred Huguenot refugee artists and craftsmen are recorded as working in London before and after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, which marked the height of the persecution of the Protestants in France. This book is an introduction to the range of their artistic contributions, centred on the British metropolis, and the extents of their artistic influence outside London. Huguenots are associated with the London goldsmiths' and silkweaving trades, but their contribution to art education, decorative painting, engraving, sculpture, wood-work, furniture, upholstery, jewellry and watch-making in this period is less well known.

Over a period of 150 years thousands of French Protestants fled Catholic repression in their native country to seek new lives in England. Robin Gwynn's little book is ideal for anyone who is descended from a Huguenot or simply wants to know more about these remarkable people. The book briefly outlines the history of the Huguenots explaining why they left France, and then examines their influence on Brtish society of the 17th and 18th centuries. Central to the book is a Huguenot guide to London which details the places in the city where the Huguenots clustered together, namely Soho, Spitalfields and Wandsworth. This book is a great place to start for anyone interested in learning more about the Huguenots and their legacy.

My aunt is descended from the Huguenots and I bought this book for her. She has found it very useful and interesting. It is very imformative about the trades and occupations and has some nice pictures too. It also has contact addresses for her to continue her search. I would say a very good introductory book to the subject.

The book "Huguenots of London" helps in my research and genealogy of the Rowlett/Roulet French family of Great Britian and Ireland. To know why they came and possible when they came, helps to define them as a people, without the land of their fathers and in a place where they didn't know the language and were in the shadows of the land. It helps establish their contributions to Great Britian with their artistry, intelligence and finally they assimilated into the culture of the land, taking British brides and losing their language over several generations. Some of the French Huguenots fled to the Americas and there is here in America many names and traces of them as well.
