Consider this an album-length sequel to "Ain't Livin' Long Like This", the autobiographical anthem that established Rodney Crowell at the songwriting vanguard of mid-1970s Nashville. Though his career has seen more misfires than hits in recent years, his music here returns to its purest, strongest impulses. Whether he's taking creative leaps beyond the facts of his life ("The Rock of My Soul", "I Wish It Would Rain") or operating within a more transparently confessional mode ("Why Don't We Talk About It", "I Know Love Is All I Need"), the results ring redemptively true. The album's centrepiece is a duet with Johnny Cash on "I Walk the Line Revisited", as Crowell puts his imprint on one of his former father-in-law's signature tunes. With echoes of some formative influences--from Sun rockabilly and Houston honky-tonk to Buddy Holly and the Byrds--Crowell's music buoyantly complements the plainspoken testament of the lyrics. --Don McLeese
Product Description
RODNEY CROWELL The Houston Kid (2001 US AUTOGRAPHED 11-track CD album picture sleeve which has been dedicated and signed on the front To Stacie from Rodney Crowell in silver marker pen! SUG-CD-1065)
Crowell's best album since the brilliant Diamonds and Dirt and this is very different. Hard hitting song after song written with real feeling dealing with very real issues with the most basic of backing. Wife-beating, drugs, prostitution, AIDs are all issues dealt with. Legendary Johnny Cash helps out on I walk the Line Revisited. This is a highly satisfying album, an album that makes you think but never fails to entertain!
I bought this CD having never heard of Rodney Crowell before, but I certainly will look for more of his work. The words of the songs make you laugh, make you sad and make you think - not heavy - very entertianing. The guitar playing is superb, perhaps you can tell, one of my favourite and much played CD's.
Rodney Crowell has issued four albums in the last ten years and this is easily his best though all are some value. The Houston Kid could be seen as a concept album with the songs so much related to each other and to the album's title. Though the characters may not be the most pleasant or happy ones and are hardly typical of pop songs, he creates fascinating narratives and gives his characters surprising depth within the constraints and context of his songs. The musicianship is also first rate, as is the understated production by Crowell himself and co-producers including Steuart Smith and Peter Coleman.
I know Crowell has done a couple of albums since this, but I reckon this to be his finest work, almost akin to a collection of short stories - stunning songs on a series of really interesting subjects. Who else in mainstream country music would write a song about a gay gigolo who is HIV positive coming home to be nursed in his dying days by his brother (I Wish It Would Rain & Wandering Boy). It also contains the rousing Walk The Line Revisited. All beautifully played, too. A classic.
