From the Publisher

Deborah Houlding is a well known and highly respected teacher and practitioner of horary astrology. Her original version of this book came out in 1998 but has been out of circulation for several years. Its welcome return comes in the form of a newly revised and very much updated version of the 1998 edition. The author has included an excellent Appendix on traditional terms, and a Preliminary Guide to the concept of house systems. In depth information is also given on many traditional techniques, which will prove invaluable to the astrology student. An essential source book and almost required reading for any serious astrologer.

Format: Paperback
As an essential part of any form of astrology, a clear grounding in the astrological houses should be one of the most fundamental goals of a good practitioner. However, throughout the many centuries of astrological practise, a distortion has arisen as to their precise meaning. Deborah Houlding, in her book `The Houses: Temples of the Sky', not only defines and explains the significance of the houses through a clear approach but also traces the history of the houses so that their functions have once again brought to life in the rich and vibrant way they had previously been used . The layout is excellent making it easy to follow and, even more importantly, to locate any reference. I find the index for the house rulerships particularly useful. Deborah's extensive research has at last clarified much of the confusion surrounding this important issue and brought to light lost techniques that have been buried under a mountain of misunderstanding.

I was lucky enough to get a copy of the first edition of this book a few years ago and found it to be truly groundbreaking work. With the revised and greatly expanded edition it is still the most comprehensive and accurate book available on the houses. As an astrologer I would not be without it and I recommend it to anyone who wants to know the truth about the houses.

I was disappointed by this book, largely because of its over-traditional approach to the subject. It is I think overly unflattering about the meaning of the sixth and the twelfth houses in particular, stressing their negative attributes. These houses relate to the signs of Virgo (relates to harvest, attention to health, detail and work) and Pisces (relates to spirituality, imagination and the arts) respectively which like all the signs have both positive and negative in them (on a similar note one thinks of the traditional scapegoating of Scorpio as the real baddy of the zodiac). It was if though the author wished you could cut out some large aspect of life and humanity not be left wanting in some particular way. I wouldn't go as far as the oft used Australian adage - its all good, but perhaps all the archetypes in astrology are necessary.

This book was recommended by our Astrology teacher but I had bought it already. The author takes a traditional view of the subject and has clearly researched the older works but presents the material clearly enabling the reader to make use the interpretations. It leans mainly to Horary but would make a useful textbook to those studying other disciplines.
