Product Description

A sexy and stylishly crafted psychological thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, THE HOUSEMAID (Cannes Palme d Or nominee 2010) tells the tale of one woman s influence that tears a rich family apart.

Eun-yi (Jeon Do-youn) is hired as a nanny in an opulent mansion owned by the wealthy and handsome businessman Hoon Goh (Lee Jung-jae). He wastes no time in seducing his alluring young employee who seemingly has little choice but to comply with his sexual advances. Soon the vengeful women of the family, including a villainous matriarch and a heavily pregnant wife, plot against Eun-yi who must fight an equally devious battle to protect herself.

Suffused with a highly charged eroticism amidst a series of steamy sex scenes, THE HOUSEMAID is a supremely entertaining and compellingly constructed movie that is one of the most expensive ever made in South Korea. The outlandish, shocking denouement brings to a close an unforgettably enjoyable ride.

Being a huge fan of Korean cinema, I kind of felt disappointed with this latest release by director Im Sang-soo. The Housemaid was an elegant and nicely shot Korean thriller/drama film, a remake based on the 1960 original which I haven't seen yet so I can't make a comparison. Jeon Do-Yeon plays a sweethearted and kind housemaid that grew up in a harsh environment and tries to make a living by becoming a housemaid for a rich and influential family. Her performance was amazing and Seo Woo did a decent job of playing the spoiled brat as well. And later gets tormented by the wife and the wife's mother of the house, in a very vicious manner. In fact the whole family is crazy except the daughter. This is a dark movie with a handful of sex scenes and graphic parts. There are few foreshadowing in this film, and some characters reactions seemed obvious but the ending was weak, because karma does not come into play, but then again it just shows the dark side of reality I guess. Director Sang-soo Im had the privilege of building a full house of his dreams to describe the environment the rich live in, which contrasts sharply with the few realistic shots in the modern city environment. The visuals he created, sets and colors are excellent and are part of the quality of the film. However the film loses points for weak character development and that bizarre and over the top ending. Still Housemaid was a pretty decent film and I'm sure that some Asian film fans will enjoy this for its great cinematography and top notch acting.

Even better than the original (well thats my personal opinion anyway). This film is gripping and really shows the haves and have not divide to its fullest which is the same no matter what the culture....Brilliant Director

The Housemaid (1960) is a classic tale of a young woman going to work in a middle-class family's home and destroying them from the inside. Lead actress Lee Eun Shim was so powerful in her role that she never worked again due to the public hating her character so much (sounds ridiculous but I assure you, it is true). A fantastic piece of cinema that has stood the test of time brilliantly. When I heard they were remaking it, I was kind of concerned as it is essentially a film of it's time and hoped they'd stay true to the story and set it in the 60's. No such luck. It plays more like one of those erotic thrillers from the 90's that went straight to video and show up on channel 5 every now and again. The social commentary is gone, replaced with pointless sex scenes. Jeon Do Yeon is one of Korea's finest actresses but even with a supporting cast of Lee Jeong Jae, Seo Woo and the highly under-rated Park Ji Yeong, nothing can save this absolute turkey from burning in cinematic hell.
If you want to treat yourself, chase up the original version. If you've got someone you hate, buy them this for Christmas.
