More About the Author

Myra Duffy started writing at a very early age, both fiction and non-fiction. She now concentrates on fiction and although she still writes short stories and poetry, prefers to focus on novels, mainly cosy crime. 'When Old Ghosts Meet' was published in 2009, 'The House at Ettrick Bay' in 2010 and 'Last Ferry to Bute' in 2011.
'Last Dance at the Rothesay Pavilion', 'Endgame at Port Bannatyne', 'Grave Matters at St Blane's' and 'Death at the Kyles of Bute' followed, making a total of six cosy crime novels set on the Isle of Bute and the prequel 'When Old Ghosts Meet' set on Bute, Glasgow, Edinburgh and London.

Brandanes ( natives of Bute ) or those who like me know this beautiful island will love this fairly simple mystery. The plot is not too demanding while the descriptions of the island, transport and buildings are accurate and interesting. I enjoyed it, but if you have no connection with Bute then it may not have the same appeal.
If however you are thinking of holidaying on this resort island; then try The House At Ettrick Bay to get a feal for the place.

The House at Ettrick Bay begins with short prologue - it's a fabulous description of the brooding house in its setting at Ettrick Bay and there is a ghostly hook. I was immediately drawn into the story of Susie, who inherits the house, and couldn't wait to read on. The story is one of mystery, murder and intrigue on the remote Scottish island of Bute. I don't want to give away this suspenseful plot but will say that Ms Duffy's skilful and descriptive writing will keep you engrossed right to the very end. Highly recommended.

As usual Myra Duffy keep you going with trips on the Isle bringing back fond memories. Getting fond of the main character Alison.
Murder just seems to occur.

I was really looking forward to reading this as my family live on this island not far from Ettrick Bay. I was hoping for a gripping ghost/thriller story as it portrayed to be but I was left disappointed although its still worth a read.

An okay read, but the characters can be a bit annoying and frustrating at times. You want to give them a good shake to get some reaction or sense out of them. I have purchased two other books by Myra Duffy so hopefully they will be a bit better written and a better story. The House at Ettrick Bay could have been shortened in some sense as it seemed to drag on over the months with not much happening. It did not explain why the main character had to do her friend a favour by keep going to the island and the house because her friend would not return from America to see her inheritance. Already I have forgotten the character's names and as the story came to near the end I found I could put the book down for days at a time and not bother to pick it up - it didn't make me want to keep turning the pages and read into the daylight hours. If you have nothing to do on a wet afternoon then give it a go.

Ms Duffy has a great sense of place, she must know Bute very well. I like the tightness of her plotting. I just think she could let rip a bit more.
