Product Description

First Time on DVD!

The story takes place deep within the Welsh countryside where there stands a deserted mansion that seems to cast a long shadow over the land. Outside the rain comes down in violent torrents while inside, the musty air hangs undisturbed. Dust on the decrepit furniture is testament to decades of abandonment. Lightning filters through the boarded windows, illuminating the dark shroud that envelops everything, turning each room into an abyss.

Years of quiet vigil are broken by an intruder, a young writer spurred on by a wager, has come seeking solitude and the atmosphere in which he will compose a novel within 24 hours. The house seems a propitious setting for his needs---or is it?

He has arrived on the eve of a strange reunion that unites an ancient family with its cursed existence. He is forewarned of possible danger by a woman who mysteriously enters the strange surroundings.Soon they are both embroiled in the family's secret as one by one the members of the family are murdered and the mystery draws menacingly closer.

At last! 2 Feb 2012
Format:DVD
Not the greatest or the most frightening of horror thrillers, and it probably won't appeal to today's teenage market, but for the rest of us this one is a real nostalgic gem, featuring as it does the three greats of horror cinema: Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Vincent Price. Renowned horror director Pete Walker directs with his tongue firmly in his cheek, and peppers his tale with frights and laughs in equal measure.

The fact that this is going to be a widescreen edition makes it all the more fantastic, as this will be the first official widescreen DVD release of this lost treasure EVER!

I can't wait! Three cheers!

as spoken by the greatest master of horror of them all, the late, and always missed, Vincent Price. This movie is simply great. It's possible that I find it so because I watched it at the time of its release, and for me, it had it all. A great plot, an eerie atmosphere, a cool ending and of course, four of the greatest horror legends of them all. And I mean horror, not the scatological bloodbath that the genre became nowadays. This movie is not horror though, but instead a suspense thriller that has no intention of changing the way you see the universe, or to challenge your religious beliefs. No, all it intends to do is to entertain, and entertain it does. So if you want a roller-coaster ride with explosions and shots filled with endless gore, go somewhere else. But if you want honest, smart fun, this might be it.

What fantastic news to hear of the imminent release of this Pete Walker 'lost' treasure. Obviously, this is not a review of the DVD yet, and I shall probably submit a second review when I've actually been able to check the disc out properly. But I just wanted to draw your attention, if need be, to the movie itself, a joyous exercise in genre-bending. Is it a horror film, a comedy, a thriller, or what? It's actually one big joke at the expense of the viewer, but I'm sure it's meant kindly. Once you're in on the joke, you're able to evaluate the movie for what it is - an atmosphere-soaked and very stylish homage to the golden days of Hammer and Amicus.

"House of Long Shadows" was conspicuously absent from the Pete Walker coffin box from Anchor Bay, but then it wouldn't really have fit in with the darker, more disturbing movies in that DVD set. No, this film is a definite one-off from the director and all concerned, but like all the best parties, clearly "a good time was had by all".

Mention should go to the supporting players having to act 'seriously' amidst all the hamming from Cushing, Lee, Price AND Carradine - what a magnificent quartet - and that includes veteran Richard Todd and imported 'star' Desi Arnaz Jr. who really copes well in his "fish out of water" role. Sheila Keith, as always, steals all her scenes. Only Julie Peasgood comes across as a bit wooden. She's easy enough on the eye, but you can 'see' her acting all the time!

Nevertheless, it's so good to have this title up for release in September (along with Lewis Allen's "The Uninvited") when you consider all the dross that's churned out on discs these days.
