What fantastic news to hear of the imminent release of this Pete Walker 'lost' treasure. Obviously, this is not a review of the DVD yet, and I shall probably submit a second review when I've actually been able to check the disc out properly. But I just wanted to draw your attention, if need be, to the movie itself, a joyous exercise in genre-bending. Is it a horror film, a comedy, a thriller, or what? It's actually one big joke at the expense of the viewer, but I'm sure it's meant kindly. Once you're in on the joke, you're able to evaluate the movie for what it is - an atmosphere-soaked and very stylish homage to the golden days of Hammer and Amicus.
"House of Long Shadows" was conspicuously absent from the Pete Walker coffin box from Anchor Bay, but then it wouldn't really have fit in with the darker, more disturbing movies in that DVD set. No, this film is a definite one-off from the director and all concerned, but like all the best parties, clearly "a good time was had by all".
Mention should go to the supporting players having to act 'seriously' amidst all the hamming from Cushing, Lee, Price AND Carradine - what a magnificent quartet - and that includes veteran Richard Todd and imported 'star' Desi Arnaz Jr. who really copes well in his "fish out of water" role. Sheila Keith, as always, steals all her scenes. Only Julie Peasgood comes across as a bit wooden. She's easy enough on the eye, but you can 'see' her acting all the time!
Nevertheless, it's so good to have this title up for release in September (along with Lewis Allen's "The Uninvited") when you consider all the dross that's churned out on discs these days.
