The phrase 'they don't make em like this any more' is very over used, but I'm afriad is true in this case. Every episode, even though shot on video and sadly now looking flat and of poor quality, is like a mini-movie - beautiful and extensive costumes and sets all perfectly realised. The scope is quite astounding - you never see the same dress or location twice! Even Paris in 1924 complete with posters for the Olympics! The soundtrack (also available) is full of pithy jazz numbers and lovely melodies, again, the care that has gone in is fantastic. However, this attention to detail and style is not at the expense of the drama itself, it merely serves to draw you in to the House of Eliott and the 1920's world commpletely so the writing and acting can do their thing.

They don't make em like this any more, becuase it seems to me that modern drama is afraid to ask you to care about flawed characters, and flawed they all are. Bea is passionate to the point of obsession - prickly, rude and difficult to be with. Jack can be selfish and demanding. Evie can be short sighted and self obsessed. But they are all wonderful none the less, you love them becuase they are real people. All the characters are brilliant, Tilly, Madge and Agnes the seamstresses, Lydia and Arthur in the first series and wonderufl, wonderful Penelope who is gone all too quickly but burns very brightly. Everyone even the guest stars are multi-layered, flawed, wonderful characters allowed time to grow slowly so you truly care about them. The relationship between Jack and Bea in particular is a tour de force, one of the very best depictions of love(and hate) you'll see, I promise you.

It's like a trip down memory lane watching the House of Eliott.
Love it, and I recieved a refund on part of the cost as the price of the DVD, so even better.
Totally recommend it, hugely enjoyable.

Having recently received the box set of "House of Eliott", I was disappointed to find a problem.

In series 2, disc 2, I found that Episode 4, although correctly headlined, contains, on playing, Episode 5.

Episode 5, is correctly identified and plays 5.

It means therefore that there are, on the disc, two Episodes five, and no Episode 4.

The series, this apart, is excellent, and the quality of the recording is also excellent.

I don't know whether it is possible to have a correct disc, but I imagine that the whole run of the recording

process would be the same. If there is an amended disc available, I woould certainly welcome being provided with

one. It is a shame that an otherwise excellent box set is so disappointing.

I loved watching this in my own home without interruptions. I never did get to watch every episode when it was first shown on TV, but this was a wonderful present from my daughter for Xmas and a great way to while away these cold damp depressing days. I just wanted it to go on further.

A splendid example of period drama and far more acceptable than some of the utter drivel of modern day television viewing.

I watched the House of Eliott when it was first on TV and wanted to see it again at my leisure so I bought the box set. It's just as good as I remembered. The clothing is gorgeous, the people involved with it did a brilliant job. There were one or two occasions when the characters annoyed me but I think that's more to do with it being set in the twenties and me living in 2014 rather than anything else.

I think it was the Downton Abbey of its day - I remember watching it on TV when it was on 1991 -4 and wanted to see it again. Excellent. Just the style of movie I enjoy and the fact that there is a whole series watch is great. Lesley
