J. Sheridan LeFanu -- Irish author of such classics as the short vampire novel Carmella (reputed to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula) and A Chapter in the History of the Tyrone Family (said to be the tale that gave rise to Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights -- lived from 1814 until 1873. He wrote all sorts of tales, but he's best remembered as a writer of mysteries and horror.
Horrors like this one, The House by the Churchyard -- a thrilling, haunting tale that remains in the memory long after the lights go out. Set in Chapelizod in Dublin (where LeFanu lived for some time) it was an important source for James Joyce's Finnegans Wake.

The first part of this novel is very confusing,so many different characters were introduced all in one go,i found it very hard to work out who was who.The novel has a large scope,which i found unusual for the author,his stories usually have a concentrated menace.There are a number of different storylines running through the novel,and he holds them together really well.The chapter where a story is told about a ghostly hand is a mini masterpiece in itself(i've actually seen it published on it's own in ghost story anthologies).The final revelations of the story are quite a shock (similar to his novel checkmate).The atmosphere and characters are very well painted,and there are excellent momements of horror and humour.I would reccomend this to anyone who has an interest in the author.(for an introduction to le fanu read his classic ghost stories or his masterpiece uncle silas)

Le Fanu's First Gothic Novel

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu is studied today as Victorian gothic writer. Although he wrote several gothic mystery novels, some of his best work, however, may be discovered within his shorter tales such as "Green Tea," "Carmilla," etc. The House by the Churchyard was his first gothic novel, but it was unlike his other gothic novels due to the comical nature of the work. Although the gothic elements are indeed present, the humor which is found within this text is truly delightful; I could not help but to chuckle at a few select scenes. Unfortunately, this work seems to be falling out of print. Therefore, I would recommend to the literary student, who may be trying to acquire Le Fanu's work, to locate a good used copy on Amazon. This particular edition (Pocket Classics) is a good copy with a thick and durable paperback cover.

I didn't get my book... do not buy from this dealer, or you won't get it. The money was taken out of my account & I did not recieve a book. So either I deserve an explanation, or this dealer is a thief & I warn you to not buy from them.
