Product Description

Product Description

After his father is captured in South America and presumed dead, Edred Arden inherits the title Lord of Arden and moves with his sister Elfrida into the family castle. Here the children discover an ancient spell, which they use to conjure up the magical Mouldiwarp. With his help, they set off in search of the lost Arden treasure. Soon a magical time-travelling adventure begins and the children find themselves in the middle of the Napoleonic wars and imprisoned in the tower for treason. But still no treasure. Wiser but slightly disappointed, the children return to the present to discover the greatest treasure of all waiting for them...their father.

About the Author

Edith Nesbit (1858-1924) wrote more than sixty books for children under the name E. Nesbit, including Five Children and It and The Story of the Amulet. After a nomadic childhood—living for periods in London, Europe, and a country manor in Kent—Nesbit married a young Socialist businessman named Hubert Bland. Not long after the marriage, Bland became ill and his business floundered. Having written poetry in her teens, Nesbit found she could support her family by selling stories and poems to magazines and greeting-card companies. She did not experience true success, however, until the age of forty, when she began publishing novels for children. Throughout much of her life, Nesbit was at the center of a community of artists and political activists; both she and her husband were founding members, along with George Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells, of the Fabian Society, a Socialist group with close ties to Britain's Labour Party. Even in old age, Nesbit considered herself a child in an adult's body, writing in her autobiography that if others like her were "ever recognized for what they are, it is when they happen to have the use of their pens—when they write for and about children." --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

A fabulous book 26 Oct 2002
By C. M. Collier VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a companion to Hardings Luck,so read both of them if you can.If not, this is wonderful by itself.
Edred and Elfrida find a way to go back in time by putting on clothes from a different era. They meet their cousin Dickie while in the past-but why does he have a bill from their time in his pocket?
This gets very exciting and can be a bit scary,(Edred and Elfrida are imprisoned in the Tower for treason at one point!)but of course it all turns out right,if a bit improbable,in the end.
This is a smashing read and if you read the 2 books together you will see why E.Nesbit is still so popular today.

Phantastic Literature of the best kind - to be reread again 27 Aug 1997
By hugh@icenet.com.au - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Two 10-year-olds are the last survivors of a long line of english aristocrats. The family castle lies in ruins, but the children are determined to restore it to its former glory with the help of the long-lost family treasure. The task seems daunting, but they soon discover there's some intricate, powerful magic in the family crest..
Subsequently the treasure hunt hurtles along at breathtaking pace. The magic includes frequent trips into the turbulent (and dangerous) times of England's feudal past to discover the exact time and place where the treasure was hidden..
This book and it's sequel (or prequel?!) "Harding's Luck" can't be recommended enough. They are children's classics of the nicest kind - not the least bit sirupy - but full of adventure and magic

Favorite books of my childhood 28 Nov 2005
By Lovetoread - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I got this and "Hardings Luck" one christmas about twentyfive years ago. These stories have stayed with me throughout my adult life and I have never forgotten how I was swept away by the stories. These books are educational while being simply spellbinding...my imagination went wild, back then. Absolutely a must!

One of E. Nesbit's best 19 Mar 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
One of the delightful things about this book is that it treats children as thinking beings, yet still manages to contain all of the magic and adventure of childhood. As in all of her work, E. Nesbit tells an exciting story while encouraging the reader to consider the meaning of things. One of the best books written by one of the best children's writers of all time.
