5.0 out of 5 stars Why oh why is this out of print? 1 Feb 2003
Format:Paperback
By far my favourite ever book and author this is an absorbing, and entertaining read that you won't want to put down. While some elements of the setting may not be wholly original (young lord, driven from his home by invaders, must train and travel until he can seek his revenge) the way in which the story is told and the characterisation are incredibly well done. You really feel for the characters and become involved in their journey and relationships. When I first read this I didn't know there was a sequel but I wasted no time in searching the book shops until I found one. There are in fact 3 more books in this series all equally good and each with a different slant (horror/conspiracy etc), The Demon Lord, The Dragon Lord, and the Warlord's Domain. They must be read in order as the plot becomes gradually more involved and new truths and conspiracies are uncovered.
Peter Morwood has a wonderful talent for mixing fantasy with sci-fi - read carefully and you'll see sci-fi elements through the eyes of one who lives in a world of magic.
If you like this then you'll also like his Tales from Old Russia series (beginning with Prince Ivan). And the Clan Wars books (prequels to the Horse Lord but sadly out of print and very expensive second hand [...] but thats how prized they are).
Buy this second hand NOW and enjoy the best read you've had in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding debut 15 July 2011
Format:Paperback
Recently tweaked by the author, but that's just being a perfectionist. A rollicking-good high fantasy adventure with gripping plot, great characters and well-researched sword & armour references. Throw in some truly unexpected plot twista - especially later in the series - and you just shouldn't miss this if you're a fan of sword & sorcery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Morwood: Opium for the Fantasy Addiction 9 Feb 2000
By CatSpit - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
About 10 years ago at the age of 14 I picked up this novel from Morwood, and put it down again a couple of days later after I'd done nothing else but read. Since that first hit I've been addicted to the Book of Years, and other Morwood spin-offs from this series. The pages on my poor old paperbacks are worn and tattered from so many reads (and the occasional accidental dip in the bath).
The story of the young warrior unfolds over the 4 books remarkably well. From the loss of his family we follow his adventures through dark and treacherous lands in the attempt to fulfil his oath and avenge his father's death. The plot is gripping, the dialogue wry and entertaining, and the characters well-developed. If you like your fantasy a bit more adult, don't just buy this book, get the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWSOME !!! You won't be able to put this one down!!! 25 Jun 1999

"The Book of Years" is began in "The Horse Lord". I would have to say it is one of my favorite books and series as well. Non-stop action, the wording of this tale flows smoothly and before you know it is time to get ready for work cause you just couldn't put the book down! I must have read the series over half a dozen times over the last 12 years! If you get lucky enough to find a copy, BUY IT!!! You will NOT regret it!! It is a great read!!!

Format:Mass Market Paperback
I read this book so many times that many the pages are slightly torn.

I often think of this book when I think of a good, clean, high quality fantasy.
