Still Good 20 Nov. 2012

Although I enjoyed his earlier books a bit more, this one's still good. Just personal taste, but I like his childhood reminiscences more than adult hunting and fishing experiences.

An odd collection 12 July 2013
By R. Miller - Published on
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This seems slapped together very quickly, with essays of much different length and quality (and obviously written many decades apart). It contains typos, and things you'd think would never get past an editor, e.g. having almost the exact same essay twice in a row. There are still some real gems in here, of course: this is Pat McManus we're talking about. If you have all Pat's other books, go for it. Otherwise, complete your collection of earlier books first -- and you really should do that. It's sad that he's at or near the end of his writing career, but rejoice in all the laughs he's given us over many years.

Too many repeated stories 14 April 2013
By Troy C. Field - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I usually like this writers stories, However this collection was a mish-mash of stories from across his writing career, as a result there was no ebb and flow to the stories, instead it was like being stuck in an eddy going around and around in circles. He repeated stories on several occasions and on at least one occasion had a abbreviated version of a story that was produced in another collection. I was very disappointed.

Not the greatest McManus writing 7 July 2014

I've laughed so hard that I cried while reading many of Patrick McManus' stories. This book simply didn't do it.

This is a treasure find! 26 Dec. 2013
By Chris Gregory - Published on
Format: Paperback
I was excited to get this book. It has unpublished tales that cover a fifty year period. Some of them are from McManus's college days. One of those tales is the funniest I've ever read. The Lady Who Kept Things - well, it's just a riot! I heard about that short story years ago and was anticipating a great little tale. Even so, I was surprised when I finished and realized I had tears of mirth from this hillarity! Some of the other stories were written and set aside without being submitted to Field & Stream or Outdoor Life. I think I did read Wildlife in a Room With a View, but maybe I just read about it somewhere?? In any case, a couple of these aren't the usual McManus quality, but they're all humorous and definitely worth reading since they span the length of his career - one of our best outdoor humor writers of this generation. A definite must read! The Horse in My Garage and Other Stories
